Last night I got forced into renting a movie on tape because it was not on DVD and the tape would not preform in our VCR because it was having Auto Tracking problems. I tried adjusting the tracking and everything but it still would not work. I'm wondering what is tracking on a tape? also why does a tape need this? thanks.

Simply put, moving the video heads in very small increments.
I am well aware of what a pain you are going through.
Over time/age the heads do wear out. If you have a tape head cleaner, now would be a good time to use it, and hopefully that will work. You may be able to 'fix' it using manual tracking. You'll see the distortion going either up or down on your screen and maybe it will go away.
If you do tape a show on a worn out VCR, the tape may not be playable on any other VCR because your tracking is off. Even though playing it back on yours will make it look ok, the tape is useless on any other, and if you get a new VCR your old tape may be unplayable.
