Let’s look at Audie Murphy Collection IV.
The fourth volume of Audie Murphy movies from Kino features three westerns from his early days at Universal-International new to Blu-ray. First, Audie made his western debut portraying the infamous Billy the Kid in The Kid from Texas. Next, Audie portrays the infamous Bill Doolin, showing how became an outlaw in The Cimarron Kid. Finally, Audie plays a peaceful homesteader who ends up helping the Ute Indians against a ruthless gold miner in Drums Across the River. The Kid from Texas is making its Blu-ray debut here while The Cimarron Kid and Drums Across the River have had previous overseas Blu-ray releases.

I thought the video presentation of "The Kid from Texas" was pretty mediocre at best. My grade is 2.5/5 Stars. As to the film itself I think it's pretty mediocre tale of Billy the Kid with the same grade of 2.5/5 Stars.

Many thanks for the review. I haven't yet ordered this box-set and I'm having second thoughts as the picture quality seems to be below standard.

We all want the best transfers for all the films we like, but sometimes we have to take some in less than ideal condition. If you like something enough, go for it because there is no guarantee a better one will come along.

That's a nice argument for someone who has unlimited funds, unlimited space to store a vast collection and unlimited time to watch all those discs. Other people may have to be more circumspect when choosing which discs to buy. For example, it they already have a title on DVD, buying a Blu-ray disc with mediocre picture quality may not be sensible.

My comment had nothing to do with buying an enormous number of titles because of the lack of money, space or time involved. I was simply saying if you like a title enough and aren't overly concerned about the quality in the transfer, get it because there may not be a better transfer later or it may go completely out of print. If you have something on DVD and don't think the Blu Ray is better, then fine. That is your decision.

Okay so I got my set, and first popped The Cimarron Kid into the player. I immediately thought it looked really good, and wondered what the complaints were about. Next I tried The Kid From Texas, and holy crap, what happened? I felt like I had time-traveled to 1987 and was watching an RCA Selectavision disc or something. I'm truly shocked that Kino would greenlight a transfer looking this shabby in 2025. And I have fairly low standards when it comes to picture quality which is why I'm perfectly happy with digital purchases over physical media, but this was way below my expectations.

Mark,

I only commented on “The Kid from Texas” which was not good. I thought “The Cimarron Kid” was much better but I did notice some issues that was noted in the review. Still I thought it was a big improvement over the 2007 DVD so I’m happy with this Blu-ray. Drums Across the River was pretty good but the colors weren’t as vibrant as “The Cimarron Kid”.

I haven't purchased this set yet, but probably will soon. I am disappointed though to read the reviews so far on "The Kid From Texas". Since this is a title not previously released on home video like the other 2 titles, I was expecting decent quality as Kino usually provides on their classic releases.

Here's a small sample of the picture quality.
