Wow, kudos Planet Gamecube. Mixed messages from IGN and angry talkback from their members on their Cube forum made me think this was never going to happen this side of christmas.
Now to find someone in the UK doing the mod as I am far to affraid to attempt the mod myself.

Easiest freakin mod ever.
Try doing a Saturn country mod sometime. Now that SUCKS.
Original PSX mods were medium difficulty.

Michael,
Easy for you to say, I've never soldered a damn thing in my life and damned if I am going to begin with a Gamecube. :)That said, I AM going to for for a Japanese unit, hopefully pre-modded, if not, places here are already cropping up offering to do the mod (for a price mind you, £40)...

Oh hell yes for gosh sakes if you have never soldered before don't even be thinking about it.
I am only an average solderer. I taught myself years ago by taking old Atari 2600 game cartridges apart, destroying them by cutting traces, then jumpering them to fix them.

Many thanks to our very own BrianB for first telling me about these guys! They're even happy to help me avoid customs problems my end.

You're welcome. They're a very good company & have been in the import game business for years. I've had *zero* problems with them & Tronix - the other big importer I use.

Probably going to get Rogue Leader from Tronix as NCS have yet to list any US games. Know what UK based importers want for it? £60! Works out at £44 shipped via FedEx from Tronix...
I feel awful having bombarded NCS with so many e-mails this evening. Don't know if they feel oblidged to return with an answer no more then twenty monutes later, but they damn well have done. Incredible..

.....and sure enough some 10 mins after asking NCS if they have Rogue Leader, an answer in the form of "yes we do and we will add it to you order to ship with your gamecube on monday" was sitting in my in box. :)
Nice to know who I'll be getting all my games from in future.

PS: Despite now going for a modded Japanese machine, I'd like to publically thank again Dean and Peter for their kind offers in my attempts to get a US gamecube out to me on the 18th. Cheers fellas!

So essentially, we can get GCNs a week before the launch that play American games, some of which are already out?
OMG!!!
THIS IS SO GREAT!!!

Dan;
Welcome to the Importers Club! I know you'll enjoy your new system a great deal.
Here's a progress report on my Cube. I have everything ready to go for the mod: wire, a switch, and a dissected Gamecube. I just need the soldering gun and solder to complete the mod. Thankfully, we just happen to have those things at work tonight. Guess what I'll be doing during my lunch break!

That's right, and you can have it all for the price of an XBox...which you say is too expensive.

For the record, I think the 'Cube is cool (though I only want Monkeyball for now, no Luigi, Star Wars, or Waverace). If I didn't have my preorder coming, I might get an import.

Getting a GameCube that can play US and Japanese games over a week before the launch is worth $300. Besides, I can just buy an American one and do a backwards mod, right?

Sure, if you like de-soldering and your daddy won't care that you just voided your warranty.

Morgan, I did hear modding the US cube to run imports may involve a slightly different technique, or more rather a slightly more tricky way about pulling off the same mod.

As the mod to a Japanese Cube involves putting a switch between two jumper points, and then closed=US, open=Japan, I'd guess that the US Cube will be the same, but you'll have to scratch out that jumper first - something you're welcome to try, but frankly the 'normal' mod sounds a lot easier.
Oh, and thanks from me too Brian - once I see what the all-in charge to Dan including customs comes to, I'll almost certainly be ordering one as well. I can't believe that a Japanese Cube, coming via the US with the insertion of a mod device is coming to about the UK launch price next year!
