I remember reading in here waay back when that
Atom Egoyan had recorded a commentary track for
Exotica for the Canadian release of the
film. But now as I go looking for it, I find that
it is Egoyan's The Adjuster that has
a commentary track in Canada, and doesn't in the US.
BUT, the US edition is anamorphic and the
Canadian release appears not to be.
Can anyone give me any details?
(I remember one of you lucky people mentioned you'd
bumped into Egoyan shopping in some DVD retailer!)
Any advice on the differences between releases
    would be most appreciated!
    Mark

Sure would, since this one is near the top of my to-buy list.

And, hate to ask this (I know it's asked often), what's a good Canadian e-tailer?

I'm dying for a definitive DVD version of this film. People think I'm nuts when I say it, but Exotica is simply of the best films I've ever seen. I'd love to hear Egoyan's thoughts on a commentary.

I'd like to know how all the Canadian releases of his films compare to their US counterparts.
I really want that box set, but I already have The Sweet Hereafter and Exotica. I've been holding off on the rest hoping for some comparisons. [IMG]

I have the Canadian Alliance edition of Exotica. I would love it if there is a newer release planned, because it is his best film bar none (better even than The Sweet Hereafter) but it sounds like there is some confusion about the two current versions (the US Miramax and the Canadian Alliance).

There's no real difference between the two, currently.

The Canadian Alliance simply has different cover art (the "peep hole" shape with Mia Kirshner's face inside it, and the club in blue light around it). The disc inside, the physical DVD itself, is the Miramax disc. It even says Miramax on it. That said, it is a later pressing of the disc so you won't encounter any of the snafus that the first batch had in the US (a few players had trouble, not worth mentioning). But there's no commentary. There no nothing. It is a fantastic film given an underwhelming treatment.

But by all means do get the Canadian version if you can find it, because Miramax doesn't deserve the money, and Miramax put really stupid cover art on the US version (a stock photo of a generic stripper - because Egoyan's contract had specifically prohibited them from using any image of Mia stripping because he felt it would be exploiting it. So they said "Sure, we'll honor the letter of that agreement." and then they turned around and used a technicality (no prohibition against a stock photo from elsewhere) to break his wishes.

Hey Will K, does everyone named Will love this film?

If the place was real not fiction, we could all go on a field trip!

    Jason-
You are VERY lucky! And I totally agree with you:
Egoyan is one of the most talented directors out
there...easily in my top five, regardless of nation
of origins. If I could chat with any living director,
    he'd be my pick.
I'll look forward to that other link.

    Bill-
Thanks for the comparrision of the two Exotica releases.
Anyone care to compare the releases of the US vs Candian
releases of THE ADJUSTER, since that one
is denoted as including a commentary track in Canada?
    Regards,
    Mark

I have the Atom Egoyan Canadian box set, which contains the Canadian version of the Adjuster. While the extras may be nice, the transfer is non-anamorphic. It has some of the worst aliasing I have ever seen on DVD. For point of reference, I have a Toshiba SD-5109 (progressive scan) and a Toshiba TW40X81.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments, especially, Marc
for the comparrison. It was as I feared, for
The Adjuster: I'll keep my current
US version when I just want to watch the film, but
I'll buy the Canadian release (probably in the boxed
set...if I can find it at an e-tailer) for the extras,
which I am very interested in.
I too hate the cover of the Miramax release of
Exotica: It makes the film look like
one of those "late night" R-rated dvds for people who
ran out of Red Shoe Diaries DVDs to buy.
