I just have to vent about this. I'll be watching the news or listening to the radio and I hear something like this.

"A person was robbed at knife point at an ATM machine today".

    or

" It quick and easy all you have to do is enter your PIN number"

I think why you hear that is because an ATM these days is looked at as the collection of the machines as one unit, and ATM machine is one machine within that collection.

Took me a couple times to read the thread before I actually realized what it was about.

My mother used to always say, turn on the TLC (The Learning Channel). Annoyed the hell outta me.

Agreed. The same way DVD went from meaning Digital Versitile Disc (or Digital Video Disc) to just simply meaning DVD.

With popular sayings, the acronym becomes the word.

Ah...acronyms! So many TLA's...so little time.

In computing, one sees the old double-up problem all the time.

    Some examples:

NIC Card (Network Interface Card Card)(some may argue that it stands for Network Interface Controller...in which case it is okay!)

    PC Computer (Personal Computer Computer)
CD-R Recorder (Compact Disc Recorder Recorder)

Makes me think of a joke I saw on TV about Americans calling it "Tuna Fish" whereas we in Canada just assume that a Tuna is a fish! [IMG]

I put my personal PIN number in the automatic ATM machine, then go home and watch the TLC channel at the University of UF on my personal PC computer. What's so wrong about that?

I used to get annoyed at people who would use the phrase "GPS satellite." Imagine my embarrassment when I discovered that this is, in fact, correct. :b

The one I hate is "free gift". As opposed to an unfree one?
