In prep for some upcoming reviews I have cannibalized my SVS prime bookshelf speakers, an Energy Take 5 sub and added a TA2 (my second piece of Emotiva gear!) to build a mutt 2.1 system. Sounds pretty ace. :) way better than my Denon 800 and el cheap pioneer speaker setup did back in college

Will see what some higher end speakers can do to bring it to the next level. Currently playing lossless and premium lossless over Bluetooth. Next steps:
- figuring out how the high and low pass filters affect sound
- putting together “real” stands
- playing with Toe In
- maybe a Umik run?
- maybe a Wiim?
- maybe tidal?

Listening test:

I try to keep my speaker reviews fairly subjective since I lack the equipment for real, objective measurements and tests. Those SVS bookshelves are no slouches in their own right, [I use them for rear surrounds] so it will be interesting to hear your thoughts on how they compare to "higher end speakers."

Be sure to try them on stands, at least a couple feet from the back wall, with side walls as far away as possible, and... this is the radical part according to conventional thought... aimed straight forward. With the best music recordings you have.

Well yeah. Every room is a compromise. Some rooms are more compromised than others. :(

I have an open floor plan house. It’s a giant balloon. The basement has a huge dogleg left. My main floor tv watching area is open to the kitchen. My home theater has a little side bubble back left. This new listening area for stereo has a huge open area to the right. It’s not optimal.

But!
3 big upgrades:
- stands (shitty ones but still)
- upgraded the sub to the SB 3000
- bookshelves are now KEF Q Concertos!

So yes I will swap sub off and on and compare loosely with the SVS primes.

The KEF concertos are officially under review. And boy do I have an upcoming KEF surprise for you guys (not a giveaway!). And the KEF reps turned me on to this technique:
