Minority Report
Spider-Man
Attack of the Clones
Panic Room

Those are the only films I would mention so far. We usually have to wait until around Sept/Oct to catch up to the first half of the year in terms of US Release.

Here are the 10 best films (in my opinion) to be released so far this year in order:

1) FRAILTY
2) SIGNS
3) PANIC ROOM
4) MINORITY REPORT
5) SPIDER-MAN
6) ROAD TO PERDITION
7) BLADE II
8) INSOMNIA
9) BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF
10) THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES

I liked a lot of the films that aren't on this list, but there has been some crap released too.

I always make a list too and usually the ones I buy on dvd are my favorites of that given year. Some years like 2001 only have a few titles I bought. So far:

1. Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
2. Signs
3. Ice Age
4. The Rookie
5. Minority Report
6. The Bourne Identity
7. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron
8. Big Fat Liar

Confession: I haven't seen Panic Room or Sum of all Fears yet.

I'm surprised so many people liked Panic Room. I thought it was a Home Alone clone and nothing more.

1. Thirteen Conversations About One Thing
2. Metropolis
3. Minority Report
4. Spirited Away
5. Lilo and Stitch
6. Monsoon Wedding
7. Italian for Beginners
8. Kissing Jessica Stein
9. Time Out
10. Dogtown and Z-Boys
Re: Kandahar's release date:
It was shown at the Toronto Film Festival and then opened in a theater in December 2001.
More than one theater; it had a successful run in late November at three theaters in Vancouver, and also played in Victoria, Montreal, Calgary and Halifax if I'm not mistaken. But it's cool to count it as 2002 down in your parts. :)

Wasn't The Piano Teacher from last year? If not I would probably put it at #1 on my list.

Well Brook, the Piano Teacher is just about to open here in Indy and won this years Cannes' Golden Palm, IIRC. It is being mentioned in lists as a contender for the 2002 Oscar season as well.
