Aspect Ratio for Panasonic 50" (1 Viewer)

I have the Panasonic TH50 plasma, and DVD player is Panny DMR E100. When watching DVDs, is there a way I can get 16:9 without using the panasonic Auto Aspect Ratio mode? I have already set my TV to 16:9, but when using the 16:9 mode on the monitor I still get black bars, until I switch to the panny auto mode. This should be fine, but I noticed sometimes the aspect ratio changes when the film is running, and the black bars reappear. Usually this is only for a little while, but it's quite irritating.

Any solutions anyone? Much appreciated, thanks.

How about setting the DVD player to 16:9 TV rather than a 4:3 TV.
