What's new

As the Warner Archive announcements are a bit late this month, anyone want to guess? (1 Viewer)

Just for fun, I'll post ten titles that might be included in the new announcements, which are coming any day now, and I am hoping at least one will be among them:

DARK OF THE SUN
DAMN YANKEES
ADAM'S RIB
THE NAKED SPUR
OPERATION CROSSBOW
SCARAMOUCHE
SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS
THE 7 FACES OF DR. LEO
GOING IN STYLE (1976)
THE SEA HAWK

Of course, Mr. Feltenstein and his crew have a way of completely catching us off-guard, so it's unlikely any of these will show up in the announcements of the next few days.

Anyone else wish to guess?

I would love a Blu-ray of Quest for Camelot, but I'm probably in the minority in wanting this so would be very surprised if we got one.

...do we really need to make lists like this? Warner knows its holdings. They also know they won't budge on most of these owing to 'less than stellar' elements and a queer unwillingness to spend whatever is necessary to restore and remaster even five of these per year until the heavy lifting has been achieved. With each passing year the state of these films isn't improving, but devolving into a state where one day no thorough restorations will, in fact, be possible. We can blue in the face it all we want. But you'll not likely see any of these any time soon. I think I have as much hope of seeing any of these released in hi-def during my lifetime as getting Fox off their lump to release Star!, Call Me Madam and Down Argentine Way to Blu before the rest of my hair falls out! Regrets.

I'm with Alex in that their selections have been so over the place, I don't know what I could possibly guess. But it seems like the past few months have all had some unofficial themes (like Henry Fonda movies in April), so I'm gonna make a nebulous guess that at least two of the titles will be related in some way, either by genre, series, cast or director.

I suppose that sooner or later Warner Archive will remember they have numerous films starring a certain Bette Davis and that some of them, for example Now, Voyager, seem to be in very good condition.

I'm a big fan of the Warner Archive Blu-ray project, but I do wish they did not have this evident disregard for the great female stars, like Bette Davis, Lana Turner and Greer Garson.

Which leads me to ask...why did you? That's a pretty lengthy one for someone who thinks they are basically useless. ;)

Such lists do drive some members crazy here, but they're fun to create, hurt no one (you can always skip over or ignore them), and might actually lead to a release or two.

Their monthly choices are so random, I would never be able to predict. But Dark of the Sun, i believe, is the only title from their poll a couple of years ago not to be released yet.

Yeah, I think we'll get this, maybe this year. Very intense and excellent thriller, and I can never enough of Yvette Mimieux. Rod Taylor is terrific, as always.

Ha, more like wishful thinking than guesses, but looking into my crystal ball I see six releases, & they are these:

The Sea Hawk (1940) the only b/w film of this batch, but more Errol Flynn to follow.
Scaramouche (1952) making two swashbucklers for this batch.
Brigadoon (1955)
Harper (1966)
There Was A Crooked Man (1970) the only western & the oddball of this batch.
Start The Revolution Without Me (1970) always good to include a comedy in this weary old world.

That's it, you can put your money on it :)

...and obviously a few of us missed the irony infused in my previous post. Warner's doing a fine job on the home video front. If they've failed to live up to everyone's expectations my only response is "oh well, can't please everyone all of the time!" In point of fact, they haven't exactly hit the bull's eye at my house lately either. Just saying.

Yes, my main & entirely justified complaint against Warner is...why aren't you releasing the titles that I want!

I'm sure the delay is owing to them just putting the finishing touches on the specs for the Raintree County: 60th Anniversary Ultimate Collectors Edition, with the roadshow release of the film fully restored and presented for the first time in 70mm, a making of documentary, a hardcover book, a copy of the soundtrack, and a packet of Raintree seeds. ;)

A guy can dream, can't he? ;)

at present, i will be content with a mediocre quality Bluray of the non-roadshow version!

By the way, i'm curious too about what's the delay with Dark of the Sun since all the other films of the poll got released, and this wasn't even the last one on people's choices.

Also, hope for at least an Error Flynn film from his big ones.
Yes, I know everyone has his tastes but sometimes I get baffled about the choice of releases.
I mean, i may be mistaken, but does a film like Vision Quest (first time i've ever heard about it) has more potential buyers than let's say the classic Sea Hawk?
it would be good if there was a thread, and insiders from various studios could explain to us how the decisions are made.
What are the criteria to release a certain film?
How are they thinking exactly?

Based upon a reply on Facebook, I would guess that Les Girls may be released sooner than later.

When asked about this title on FB recently the Archive's response wasn't the typical " we have no Blu-ray release information to impart at this time", but "Oh, we'd like to see that, too".

As I recall, that person was also asking about a few Doris Day musicals on blu, as well (but it doesn't matter which gets released, I look forward to either).
As far as what I would guess, it seems to me that this year they have had releases related to the holidays or the month (Love In The Afternoon for Valentine's Day in February, Finian's Rainbow for St. Patrick's Day in March, Seven Days In May in May, The Ballad of Cable Hogue, I assume, for Father's Day), so I can only guess we might have one release related to July (the only thing I can currently think of would be "Christmas In July," but most of the releases I can think of that would fit don't seem to be within what the genres/ time periods they have been covering this year). Anybody else have any thoughts on this?
