It still looks like a wonderful package for a superlative film. I just can't justify laying out this kind of money over and over anymore, when I already have an edition that represents a good leap over anything I previously had. Even if it's not "technically" the best there is.
And the Kino Lorber is perfectly good! No major reason to upgrade picture-wise, despite the slight uptick in quality. It's not a night and day difference at all. The Kino Lorber package and Criterion blu-ray have very good supplements too. I wanted the booklet, which comes with Arrow's Limited Edition. It's one of my key films, which I would repurchase for something like that. I probably won't bother watching The Great Escape II: The Untold Story!

As soon as I receive it, an immediate viewing will take place. I even ordered the popcorn and candy.:)
My 4K/UHD finally was delivered in the late afternoon. I still managed to watch this almost 3 hours movie in its entirety. However, any comparisons with the Kino 4K/UHD will have to wait until either today or this weekend.

At this point, the only copies of The Great Escape I still have are:

Criterion Collection laserdisc
Mid-00's non-anamorphic DVD (with United Artists anniversary celebration slipcover)
Criterion Blu-Ray
Arrow 4K/Blu-Ray

I'm only holding onto that non-anamorphic DVD because UA/MGM transferred the image at an AR of ~2.7:1... which gives even more picture information on both sides of the frame, but has the downside of revealing stuff that wasn't supposed to be seen, like the edge of the Cooler set.

How long before Arrow releases the lower priced, standard version? I will probably grab that one.

You probably already know, but the Limited Edition also includes The Great Escape II on 4K as well. This is exclusive to that release.

That's like the MGM letterboxed laserdisc that they put out not long after Criterion did theirs. MGM's was severely letterboxed in comparison with Criterion's, and their transfer didn't look as natural. It was much cheaper, though.

I'm watching now the 4k disc (I have watched 2/3 of the film already).
I wanted to ask a question:
Does anyone know if for the little German bits of dialogue, there were initially English subtitles burnt in the picture when the film initially was released?
Because in the Arrow disc, we get player-generated German subtitles..
