There are ways of forcing Dolby Vision with HDR10 only capable projectors. Use an HDFury, for one. It then tricks the DV compliant device (disc player or streamer or local media decoder like the newest KScape model with Dolby Vision or Zidoo or Dune) with EDID into sending HDR12 (not HDR10) via a backwards compatible signal technique called RGB tunneling... a standard that many non Dolby Vision capable HDR displays will still accept. The device handles the dynamic Dolby HDR metadata processing, rather than the display.

I did that with my JVC 4k projector and it really worked wonders and it is true Dolby Vision via a backdoor method. The HDFury Vertex, which I went with, allows custom Dolby Vision calibration scripts to be uploaded for fine tuning, as well as manually entering Dolby Vision display values that help the DV playback device send the right HDR values to the particular display you are using.

So as not to take this thread too far off-topic, is there a good place to read up on this further?

My projector doesn't do Dolby Vision but there is definitely something to be gained from Arrow Video's HDR pass. The simple snapshots from my screen show might convey the idea, before proper comparisons are posted. Arrow have done their own grading too and have bothered to subtitle the German dialogue, which Kino Lorber didn't. Typically excellent Limited Edition package from Arrow Video - I haven't seen The Great Escape II yet.

The Arrow is the one I'll be watching in the future and the Kino has to go and find a new home!

Where are you guys ordering this set from? I tried to find it on Arrow’s US site, but it wasn’t there. I gather it’s only from the UK site? I have ordered collectors editions from Arrow before, but don’t recall doing it via the UK store.

I guess I’m in for a penny and in for a pound, I already have this film on Criterion laserdisc and blu rays, Kino releases and past DVDs and blu rays. I’m almost feeling like this release is maybe one too many. Ha, ha.

Now that I think about this, the thread does say International, so excuse my density, this release must be only a from the UK.

Had this on two laserdiscs, the Criterion blu-ray and the Kino Lorber 4K UHD. So this is the fifth (and final?) time I'm buying a physical home video version. It's available from the UK Arrow Video website, as well as Zaavi.

It's one of my favorite films of all-time since first watching it on the big screen as youngster.

One of mine as well. I watched this twice at age 13 when it first landed at the Mt. Kisco Theatre (NY) and, after a falling out with my parents about some damn thing, "ran away" from home, biking the mile back to the theater to watch it a third time at the late show (10 a.m. -1 a.m.) Felt good to sit there watching this again, while in the back of my mind I was thinking of my parents worrying about me, and how contrite they'd be if (i.e. when) I decided to come home. I recall sleeping behind nearby church, on the grass with no sleeping bag, until the chilling dew awakened me at about 3:00 a.m. I then rode my bike back, looking forward to my parents being ecstatic that I was safely home.

My parents were both awake when I returned and chewed me out for a full half-hour. Not much sympathy there!

Thanks a lot! I just edited my post with the realization that is only from the UK Arrow and other euro sources.

The UK Arrow Video website. It was dispatched Wednesday November 27th, so it took just over a week, including the Norwegian customs processing. The same for films from the BFI website. During 2024, the postal service has become much more efficient. Before, it used to take three weeks, or longer.

It's available from Rarewaves too. As far as the number of times I bought this on physical home video, this might be my ninth such purchase. I'm pretty sure I purchased it twice on video tape, both Beta and VHS. Next came the following physical home video versions. Without question, the most times I bought a title on home video.

  1. 03-31-98-DVD
  2. 06-05-02-DVD
  3. 05-18-04-DVD
  4. 05-07-13-BD (MGM/Fox)
  5. 05-12-20-BD (Criterion)
  6. 01-11-22-4K/UHD (Kino)
  7. 12-02-24-4K/UHD (Arrow)

Nine Times! I doubt even Quentin Tarantino could match you! But I'm sure you will be very happy with this purchase :) . Even when streaming quality can match what is presented on the disc, the package itself is very satisfying (I haven't seen the new supplements yet). I can remember how thrilling the gatefold two-disc Criterion LaserDisc was, over 30 years ago! This is one of those films, which used to be shown regularly on British TV over Christmas. The first time I ever saw The Great Escape, it was on VHS at the end of the 1970's, taped from British television, pan-and-scan, on a 26 inch CRT TV - with advertising breaks! I very much enjoyed it then and still get a real kick seeing it, in steadily improved quality, with every home video innovation.

Rarewaves shipped mine on November 26th. It finally showed up on USPS website on December 7th which allowed me to track it. It's being delivered today on December 12th. In comparison, my Demolition Man 4K/UHD was shipped by DiabolikDVD on December 9th. It's going to be delivered on December 14th.

I bought it twice on laserdisc, the Criterion and the MGM. I had only one VHS copy, and I didn't order the Arrow (yet), but I had the others that you did. One thing is for sure: every one I bought was better than the ones before.

I had the Arrow pre-ordered almost as soon as it went up, even though I had never gotten around to actually watching either the Criterion or the Kino at that point.
As the release date got closer, I started having a lot of regrets. I pulled the Kino out to sample a few scenes, hoping that would convince me to stand pat with what I already had. Ended up watching the whole movie and enjoying it quite a bit.
After that I cancelled my PO.

It still looks like a wonderful package for a superlative film. I just can't justify laying out this kind of money over and over anymore, when I already have an edition that represents a good leap over anything I previously had. Even if it's not "technically" the best there is.
