When they say "Brand new 4k restoration", they mean a newer restoration than the one that was prepared for the previous blu-ray?
Because that wasn't very good...

I watched the Blu-ray last year, and was very annoyed/disappointed with Friedkin's heavy-handed revisionism of the video transfer. On that mark, I think it's a good thing for Arrow to disregard their previous work and start over.

However, even though I don't necessarily dislike the movie, my feelings about it are mixed enough that I don't personally plan to buy another copy. I'm glad to have watched the movie when I did to understand what all the controversy is about, but it's not the type of thing I'm likely to watch again anytime soon.

I hear from everyone how great is the new Arrow UHD and then I see this:
The new 4K release is the one that was manipulated! It was always blue, since 1980. Just like The Exorcist was always blue, since 1973. Friedkin merely restored these two films to their original, theatrical blue grandeur for those previous home video releases, and now Arrow has gotten their grubby hands on Cruising and drained the beautiful cool blue life out of it! Let’s pray they never get their hands on The Exorcist!
Does anyone know if this post, holds any truth in it?

That's definitely nonsense, if not intentional parody. If you watch the prior Arrow Blu-ray (with Friedkin-approved transfer), it's very clear how "digital" and manipulated it looks.

One of the bonus features on the disc has an old interview with the cinematographer, who describes shooting the movie in a desaturated, almost monochromatic style. That isn't at all evident in the Blu-ray transfer, which cranks up all the colors, especially the pervasive blue tint.

It's a shame that there is no separate Blu-ray release of this new restoration. Not everyone owns a 4K UHD player or can afford the equipment to display a 4K restored film properly.

Released in 2019 from Arrow and still available for purchase that is derived from a 4K scan:

I am very aware of that release but here's the thing: It is the 2019 revisionist version by director Friedkin that had many "up in arms". It is NOT the original theatrical version that is being offered in Arrow's new 4K UHD release.
If true, then I don't blame Arrow for not releasing it twice on Blu-ray in a five-year period when they're trying to maximize profitability as a boutique company.

There is a demand for the music soundtrack which has had a vinyl release. Would have been great if they could have included it as a music-only audio channel (or CD).

I originally posted a HARD PASS on this but in diving deeper into this film's complicated history and the fact that an effort has been made to restore it to its original theatrical version I've changed my mind and I am purchasing it.

I also agree that the absence of a Blu-ray release to purchase of this version for the fans who do not have the good fortune to own 4K equipment is unfortunate.
