Arrow (Season 5) (1 Viewer)

Are you excited about the show's return to its grittier, more grounded roots?

I enjoy the show, but I am growing tired of every episode having group fights with the big bad's army (how many bad guy armies are there?). It's like the cast does a dance every week with the villain's team. It's not really fair, but it really does remind me of this:

Finished with Season 5 last night and a few things stuck out to me:

- Hopefully, with everything that happened in the finale, the show can move past being unrelentingly down all the time. Oliver continually beating himself up drained me this season.
- I very much liked the fresh faces and the returning favorites. Very quietly, Arrow keeps expanding and using it's recurring cast to great effect with each passing season.
- Alright, enough with the flashbacks. I'm positively sick of them now. I think we've covered all five years Oliver was away, so please..enough.
- I wonder what the series would be like in smaller chunks (13 episode seasons). It would invariably feel tighter and better constructed with less filler episodes. Not that this season had a lot of those, at least for me. Each ep advanced the Adrian Chase plot line in some way.
- My usual complaint is still valid: light the sets just a bit more. It's always way too dark on this show.
- Everyone was used to good effect through the year. However, by the end of the year, I could see the writer's trying to save money by omitting characters from multiple episodes (Thea, for example). I get the logistics and maybe it's just the way I look at things, but it was fairly obvious.

I'm glad Season 6 won't show up on Netflix until next summer. I need something lighter for a while.
