A newsgroup message that I read stated that a recent issue of American Cinematographer announced that Pacific Title Digital is restoring Around the World in Eighty Days.
Can anyone confirm that this is true? Perhaps this can explain why TCM went through the trouble to find a LBX print of the film to air on their network...to gain publicity that is very much needed!
    UPDATE!!!

This is the article in question...I found it. Not only is the film being restored, it's the 65mm version!

Something's wrong with your link Patrick. But this is great news. I hope it portends a DVD release.

Patrick, did the article say the restoration would be finished next year? While we all wait for it, there's always 10 PM tonight on TCM. Thanks for all your efforts on behalf of this fine film.

Good news indeed. Another film saved!
Speaking of which, has anyone noticed Robert Harris hasn't been around in a while? Hopefully that means he's too busy cuz he's fixing up some other great film! Go, Robert! [IMG]

    Thanks, Adam. Very interesting article!

I also noted with interest restorations ongoing of The Great Escape and The Man Who Knew Too Much. Perhaps before too long we'll see improved DVDs of these movies as well....

I just noticed the 65mm part!

Columbia's Lawrence of Arabia transfer is nearly grain-free (a few darker scenes have a tiny hint of grain) and although the color timing problem, the image looks beautiful!

IMO, all films should be transfered to video in their original negative format...Yes, I know the cost is pretty expensive, but the results...

Far from going nuts, I applaud anything that leads to a better way to enjoy 2001. If this proposed new DVD is better than the one Warner issued this year, then woo-hoo! Good news, if expensive. [IMG]

Didn't Robert Osborne say after the movie that it was the Todd-AO version that was being restored? I'm pretty sure he did.
