    Hi Everyone,
I just saw this movie last week, and immediately fell in love with it, so I bought the "Criterion Collection" version, but it's NOT Anamorphic. I paid $45 dollars for it at Walmart. Are they going to re-release this movie in Anamorphic? I can't stand seeing Non-Anmorphic movies on my TV, since you can see all the scan-lines through the picture!!!
Please tell me if this movie will be re-released anytime in the future.

Well, Armageddon was suppose to be one of the best examples of the best non-anamorphic picture. I think R2 one is anamorphic.
There has been talk about it but nothing concrete has really come up. If you do a search, I think you will find the threads as they were not too long ago.

THE ONLY ANAMORPHIC RELEASE OF ARMAGEDDON IS FROM R4!
The regular R1 & R2 release are not anamorphic.

Both the SE and the original Armageddon DVDs in the UK (R2) are anamorphic. I owned the original for a while but thought the picture improvement didn't justify keeping it after I bought the Criterion release.

Armegeddon, along with the Abyss, are the two best non anamorphic movies I have seen on my TW56X81 set. They are even better than some anamorphic movies.

Even though that it is almost the best looking Non-Anamorphic DVD out there, does not mean that it can't be re-released in Non-Anamorphic. I myself don't have a Widescreen TV, *BUT* I *DO* have a Sony Wega that does "16X9" enhancement with the touch of a button, and when a movie is NOT Anamorphic, it is NOT acceptable. It has scan lines that you can see all the way to the end of the earth! I hate scan lines on my TV, it makes it look like an OLD Projection TV with all those horrible scan lines through the picture.
    Non-Anamorphic is *NOT* OKAY!

David, if 'Armageddon' was released this week like this we would all be up in arms, yes. When it came out however, neither Buena Vista nor Criterion had been persuaded of the benefits of an anamorphic transfer. Buena Vista didn't necessarily want to fund a seperate transfer from the laserdisc edition, and in any case we know Criterion was actually talking with its customers about the balance between the enhancements that the few people who could get the enhanced resolution vs. the variable quality of downconversion of some early players.
Its possible that the UK release is a precursor to the US getting a rumoured Vista Series release with anamorphic video and even a DTS track like the laserdisc, but with that presently unconfirmed and the Criterion being so well made that it competes for image quality (and in my opinion certainly wins aurally) against the European releases which look slightly muddy at times I'd not feel bad about purchasing it.

no, but it's probably one of the top two non-anamorphic transfers.

I'm surprised Criterion didn't make this anamorphic. I would have to imagine Armageddon will be re-released one day because of this. However, the Criterion release does have a nice picture and audio.

I am not much a fan of this movie, but The Criterion version is worthy of purchase for the commentary featuring the asteroid expert and the NASA consultant. If you are into science, there is lots of cool stuff, and if you are into bashing the film for its technical gaffes and questionable science, they point out just about every inaccuracy you could think of as well as including some discussion of how they pointed them out to Mr. Bay who did not seem too worried about them. If I recall...
Ben Afleck: Why couldnt NASA just train astronauts to drill, rather than drillers to be astronauts?
Micheal Bay: Shut the fuck up.
    Good commentary track [IMG]

Hell, it's fun just to listen to Ben Affleck's commentary, basically tearing the movie to shreads.

"Did you ever notice how in these kinds of movies, they always have to be 'the best'? The Best deep-core driller. I didn't realize they rated Deep core drillers."
