I don't know if anyone have noticed this. Armageddon CC is 2:35.1 ratio but this is the only DVD the blacks bars filled about 50% of my 16:9 set. All other 2:35.1 DVDs filled just about 25% to 30% of the screen. Is it just my set?
    btw, I have SONY KP51HW40.

The Criterion DVD of Armageddon is not anamorphic (also known as "16:9 enhanced"). You need to watch it with different settings on the TV than you use for anamorphic DVDs. I'm not familiar with the Sony, but look for a setting that zooms the image instead of "stretching" it.

Yep, this is normal for non-anamorphic transfers.

16x9 TVs have a zoom function specifically for watching non-anamorphic content. Because non-anamorphic discs have the black bars needed for 4:3 presentation built into the video signal, when you try to watch on a 16x9 set, there will be excessive bars.

If you use the zoom mode, it reformats it properly by cropping off the top and bottom portion of the bars that were for 4:3 presentation (although with less resolution than an anamorphic title- all the reason for anamorphic in the first place!)

With correct settings on your TV, you will find that Armageddon will be the exact size and shape of any other 2.35:1 film.

Hehe, exactly Bruce. I just checked out that dvd last night on my widescreen tv. Binh Vu, I've got a Sony Widescreen tv as well and the zoom mode is what should be usded for non-anamorphic 2:35:1 aspect ratio dvd's. Just try and get it centered well on the screen.

As for non-anamorphic films in 1:85:1 aspect ratio, use wide zoom (at least on my Sony widescreen set) and adjust it a bit until you see no black at the top and bottom. A bit of a hassle, but you still get the desired effect. Thank god every new widescreen dvd offers an anamorphic transfer!!!!

    Hi

I was wondering why a Criterion version would not be anamorphic - i thought the reason you paid extra for these discs (sometimes a hell of a lot extra) was for the best quality sound and video.

Is there any other reason for buying Criterion?

    thanks

This is an older release and when it was released anamorphic was not quite so common. I'll still take the letterbox version over a P&S any day.

There're 3 different versions Armageddon CC out there. One with double size box (2 discs), one with regular side box (2 discs) and one version with DTS (1 disc, region 1 only). I'm getting the DTS version, it should be here any day. Let's see if this one any better.

Yes, it's Criterion Collection. Please take a look at ebay auction #1564977296 and tell me it's real or fake!
    Hopefully, it'll be here tomorrow.
