I'm in the middle of building a 12" riser with a 6" step, and I'm wondering if I should use padding under the carpet on riser and step? Are you using standard type carpeting, or the thinner commercial type carpet? It seems like the standard type carpet would be pretty hard to work with. Any tips on doing the corners of riser and step? Thanks.

    Hey-

Definitely pad the riser! I did three risers and went with standard carpet from Home Depot for a more luxurious feel when seated. Whereas this is a preference, padding prolongs the life of the carpet, and helps with deadening riser. If not experienced I would recommend having it professionally laid.
