They probably sell the OEM (no box) version of the software.

    Not at all legit.

    Windows 2003 Server Standart $60

Windows 2003 Server Standard OEM edition is a great deal more then $60, even academic is more.. hell, even Eopen renewal lic. is more.

    Yeah, this is fishy.

I don't see how it's fishey. Many companies sell OEM software and hardware. That's how I got this WD 120 GB hard drive

    for ~ $110 (MSRP is $190).

*laugh* because OEM cost on Server 2003 = $668 (in a three pack, it's sold to us through VARs @ ~$1800)

    http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...102-227&DEPA=6

So, um, MS isn't selling it for $60 as the website proclaims. Not even to OEMs. Buying OEM saves you good money - and it's a good deal (buy with hardware, etc.) but you will never save 10 times over average price [IMG]

hmm, read their FAQ. " This software is recognized as a backup software" sounds fishy to me.

My apologies, Chris. I wasn't aware the MSRP on that software was that high. In that case, it's definitely fishey.

No problem. I work with a wholesaler, and so when I see prices at less then what MS sells us in lots of 100/1000, I know that it's screwy [IMG]

Basically it looks like they are just selling the media. A lot of times when you buy bulk liscenses you buy the media seperate. So you will have the software (media) but it won't be legal because you don't have a liscense.

    See, something like this:

If they are legit, naturally they won't let you buy just the media, most places require you to show proof of liscense first. (by fax, etc)

If that's how they are selling the software, then then the theory is that you already own a copy of the software and you are buying a second "backup" for personal insurance against loss of the original install. It will certainly not be a version that you can register with the original manufacturer.

If you buy this software without already owning a "properly" purchased copy, they you are buying pirated software.
