are the bars black or grey when viewing HD on the Sony 36HS500 (1 Viewer)

The set should be in 16x9 enhanced mode while watching HD so the top and bottom bars should be "dead screen space" which is black. Is this what you were asking?

yes - that's exactly what I'm asking - thanks.

I prefer having black bars over grey bars - less distracting IMO.
