"Wish You Were Here" is rumored to be all set to go for SACD.

Rumored for going on 3 years. After a certain point a rumor has to change into a false rumor... I think we are at that point.

Maybe they'll release it via BitTorrent - it sure worked for that other album! [IMG]

Or, that format I see more and more of: a dvd-video disc with regular PCM stereo (48kHz/24bit or higher) plus a surround track using 5.1 Dolby and/or DTS.

Stereo fans generally seem more concerned about resolution, so they get what they want; while surround fans - many of which aren't quite as concerned about ultimate resolution (DTS sure can sound nearly like PCM) - get their surround tracks.

Hardware-wise they work in all dvd players and there are no bass management problems. And, visuals can be included.

Here's one from EMI, called an "Extended Audio Disc":

    Mahler: Symphony No. 8

Here's another one for the house/trance crowd (dvd even includes an MP3 version of the stereo tracks):

    DE9: Transitions.

I saw both of these at a Wherehouse Music store a couple days ago. The Richie Hawtin CD+dvd package was only about $17. [IMG]The *single* EMI disc though is WAY overpriced at $28 (even online stores are onlya few dollars cheaper). Weird FYI: besides the outrageous price, I couldn't find one mention of EMI's disc on their very own website, emiclassics.com! Same with Simon Rattle's website. Talk about dooming your own product. I was listening to a live David Gilmour session on XM last Friday when one of the callers asked if any of the Floyd CD's would come in 5.1. Gilmour said that whish you were here would be done in 5.1!

    where?! where!?

I find it sad that a lot of sixties groups are ashamed of their work-from 1969-1974 alot of cool underground "progressive" came out-much of it from England that you rarely heard on FM here. When they got BIG, THEN you heard them hereie: Floyd, Genisis, etc. I had to listen to Canadian (CKLG)radio to hear some of the stuff passed by here.
Im thinking of a couple groups-Pink Floyd, and an acid folk group called THE TREES, that were big in the UK but never got here, announcing that their work during that time was "pretentious" of "utter shyte"-Gilmour on AHM.
To me that shows lack of character-if the music made was from your true creative center rather than to pander to AM radio-or the bean counters-then you should be proud of the brief time where obscure bands, labels and off-beat, experimental music reigned and where allowed to florish.
And some of these LPs from the UK are worth BIG money today-becasue of their obscurity

(OK, I know the server is acting up a little)

I'm also wondering. PMs please (to avoid skating further onto even thinner ice...)

I know there is a DTS version of Meddle out there (I found it on some torrent sites), but I don't know if it works or not. I'll test it out later tonight.

Here are the other Pink Floyd DTS albums I found...
    -Dark Side
    -Wish You Were Here
-The Wall (as I recall, this was the film version)
-The Division Bell (I've gotta check this one out. TDB is one of my favorite Floyd albums)

Now, I would post links to them here, but I don't want to get into any trouble with the management here. So, if you'd like to know, just send me a PM and I'll give you the links.

    EDIT: Look what I found...
    http://www.roio.radzionkow.net/roio.htm#DTS

Apparently, there are DTS Quad Mixes for damn near every album they've ever done. I'm going to do some more digging tonight, and if I find anything out, I'll be sure to let you all know.

Many of these DTS discs however are just fake 5.1 mixes. The only Floyd albums (including material outside of the band) at this time to have true surround mixes are as follows.

    - Atom Heart Mother (Quadraphonic 4.0)
    - The Dark Side Of The Moon (Quadraphonic 4.0 and SACD Hybrid 5.1)
    - Wish You Where Here (Quadraphonic 4.0)
    - The Wall film (DVD Dolby 5.1)
    - PULSE (the DVD release coming out July 11th, Dolby 5.1)
    - Live 8 (DVD Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1)
    - Roger Waters - Ca Ira (SACD Hybrid 5.1 via the Deluxe Edition)
    - Roger Waters - In The Flesh Live (both SACD Single Layer 5.1 and DVD Dolby 5.1)
    - Roger Waters - The Wall Live In Berlin (both SACD 5.1, Dolby 5.1 Full Screen and Dolby 5.1/DTS 5.1 Widescreen)
    - David Gilmour - Meltdown 2002 (DVD Dolby 5.1)

Plus here is what has been reported from various sources:

    - David Gilmour - On An Island (David said its in the works and coming later this year in an interview recently)
    - Wish You Where Here (James Guthree is reportedly working on the mix)
    - Animals (Guthree working on this too)

To add to what Brian said, be aware that while someone may have used an actual quad-encoded LP as the source for their DTS-CD, many of the decoders used (remember, these were only sold in the early-to-late 70s) to produce the 4.0 mix were not of very high quality. And who knows how good of shape their cartridge or stylus was while making the transfer. This results in mixes where the rears are barely true left and right channels & their contribution borders on just "active ambience". This aspect of quad is one of the main reasons it failed back then, besides the fact there were five competing formats.

FYI: the "CD-4" vinyl format invented by JVC was the only truely discrete quad vinyl format, but due to its increased cost over the matrixed formats, it was never that popular.

BUT.......if the person owned a quad *tape* then it's a different story. There was the Q4 and Q8 formats (looked like an 8-track, sound itself was pretty good) and quad reel-to-reel (sounded very good). These will be true discrete 4.0 signal sources.

Dark Side Of The Moon unfun factoid: according to quad specialists, the tape version released here in the States was the victim of short-sighted label execs. To produce a tape version for us, the engineers took the 4.0 signal from the vinyl version's matrix decoder box and made the tape from that. [IMG] So yes, supposedly it sounds no better than a vinyl-sourced version.

And this is a cool little widget: DTS-610. It has other uses besides the one described.................

From what I've read, the "unauthorized" dvd-audio was made from an 8-track tape of the Quad 4.0. Everywhere I've read about it, they say it's on par with the SACD in the sound quality department. However, if you are used to the SACD mix, you may not like the quad mix.
