Hell, most of us knew that was going to be that way for a long time as I seriously doubt that's going to happen anytime in the near future.

Streaming is the future. I'm slow to adopt new media formats but I am starting to think I might go online-only when I go UHD: it's the only way to have an "HTPC" disc-less library experience with 4K.

    Playing with my ATV4K now.

One tip: before you start testing out movies - make sure you go to video settings and, if your equipment can support it, switch chroma from 4:2:0 to 4:2:2. Makes a big difference.

Let me elaborate on why the decision to make Apple 4K "streaming only" sucks. I have a lot of iTunes movies. iTunes has always had one big advantage over other digital providers in that they do not ramp down quality whether you stream or download. If your internet connection was too slow, the picture would just freeze and then buffer. Downloading the file to your hard drive would usually solve that issue. Other services: Amazon, Netflix, Vudu, all start out in SD and then ramp up to HD and will also drop back down when they sense a slow connection in order to prevent buffering. The article says that Apple 4K TV is now going to do the same when streaming 4K: slow internet will get your stream downconverted. I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed when their internet connection prevents them from getting the highest quality 4K picture on Apple TV.

Do you realize how quickly a 64GB device would run out of storage downloading 4K titles from iTunes?

You wouldn't have to store them. Just download, watch and then delete.

There is no downloading and deleting at all. The HD space is for apps, games, cache, etc. Movies are streaming only.*

*I think it might download a movie so it can play right from the HD but the system will delete it as soon as you don’t need it. It’s nothing the user has any control over.

Yes, we know. That's what we are discussing, the fact that Apple 4K is a streaming only platform.

My setup on the Sony 940E is not going well. It wants me to enable FULL HDMI support. Doing that completely messes up all the colors. Someone suggested I set the ATV to only do HDR at 30hz, will see if that helps.

On the LG 37 55" it just worked. And it is GLORIOUS.

I wonder if I'll have similar issues on my 940D. Unfortunately, I missed the FedEx guy. <_<

"The Apple TV is utterly dependent on other devices in your living room to output any audio or video, and it simply doesn’t seem to acknowledge the idea that they might be better at doing those things."

This is one part of The Verge review that actually hit home for me. And I think that may be the case with the video processing. I'd rather it output the native format of the content than trying to upscale it all and convert SDR to HDR.

I didn't know until that review that my AppleTV doesn't switch frame rates, but instead runs everything at 60hz. That might explain some minor judder I see streaming shows from my HTPC through the Emby app on the AppleTV.

There was wrong early info about this. You can set it to output any format you want, DV, SDR or HDR, 24, 30, 50, 60hz.

But does it auto switch? The criticism is that it doesn't auto-switch frame rate based on content. If set for 60, 24p movies will be resampled to 60Hz. If set for 24p, then *everything* will be at 24Hz (23.976Hz presumably) including a stuttery UI experience.

Is that not so? Does the AppleTV auto-switch frame according to mode and content?

@Sam Posten, any update on using it with your Sony?

And this is a feature, not a bug. The alternative is 5 seconds of black screen every time it switches modes. I hate when my decks do this, and think Apple has chosen the least worst alternative.

It's a design flaw by people who obviously don't really respect Movies and TV (and apparently have man-servants to use remotes so they don't have to handle the disgusting things).

Content should be played at its native frame rate by default.

Give the user an option to enable temporal re-sampling if they'd rather watch that way.
