The Adobe classroom in a book series are excellent and cover a lot of bases without being highly technical or too advanced. I highly recommend them. There are also a ton of websites that are devoted to photoshop tutorials.
http://www.designsbymark.com/
http://www.phong.com/
http://www.eyeball-design.com/index3.htm
www.moesrealm.com (my site, I don't update the Photoshop stuff anymore)
Do a search for Photoshop tutorials and you will find all the information you could possibly want.
If you have a specific question I will do my best to help you.

I havn't read anything on Photoshop 7, I've learnt everything just by playing around. It's amazing what you can do with this program.

yeah....i like what the program can do and i know it's uber-powerful.

problem is i don't know where to even start. it's just too overwhelming for me.

i must be gettin' old...or lazy....or both!

I have Photoshop Elements. Could someone briefly explain the differences (limitations) as compared with Photoshop?

Cool effects, Moe.
