Anyone researched differences between CS+ and Ultras? (1 Viewer)

Correct me where I'm wrong. As far as similarities, they use the same ports. As far as I can tell, that's where the similarities end. Is that right?

As for the differences, the Plus is the same enclosure as the CS and PC series, and the Ultra is a beefed up version of the 20-39s (birch endcaps and thicker tube). Correct? So how much nicer is the Ultra enclosure than the CS/PC/CS+ enclure?

Last but not least, the woofer. I thought they used the same woofer, but looking at the Web site, I think I was wrong. The Ultra is the TV-12 driver (produced by SVS?) and the Plus uses a db12 woofer (produced by TC Sounds?). Could anyone explain the difference in the woofers (in layman's terms); i.e., magnet size, excursion, et cetera?

Does that about sum up the similarities and differences? If so, the more important question is are the improvements (enclosure and woofer) worth the extra cash to have? I know the bang-for-your-buck route would be the Plus, but how much nicer are the ultras?

Steve,

The enclosures of the CS-Plus and CS-Ultra are identical. The CS-Ultra is the same enclosure as the 20-39CS-Plus as a matter of fact. The only substantive difference between the Plus and the Ultra is the driver.

Both drivers are made by TC Sounds. The Ultra, is and will remain the best performing driver we can find at any price. The CS-Plus is the best driver we can make, with price as a major consideration. The Plus driver is close to the Ultra, but not quite there. The Ultra remains the ultimate SVS (not counting the exotic design and finish of the SS subwoofer, which ONLY shares the Ultra driver, nearly every other component is made just for the SS).

BTW, the CS and PC lines use the same enclosure as the CS-Ultra too, only the port arrangement is different. Same tubing, same material on the end caps. For the Ultra, some minor parts are beefed up to account for the heavier burden of carrying that massive driver is all.

For the record, the CS and PC subs use a driver made by yet another US high-end speaker company.

SVS Ron, I have a question for you too, If I'm reading this correctly you say the only difference between the CS+ and Ultra is the driver, could you if you wanted just change the driver from the CS+ and put the Ultra driver in them? I'm mean would that then be an Ultra?

Craig,

"...could you if you wanted just change the driver from the CS+ and put the Ultra driver in them? I'm mean would that then be an Ultra?"

I don't think so. The last part of Ron's comment below would seem to indicate that extra reinforcing is done with the Ultra:

"Ron: BTW, the CS and PC lines use the same enclosure as the CS-Ultra too, only the port arrangement is different. Same tubing, same material on the end caps. For the Ultra, some minor parts are beefed up to account for the heavier burden of carrying that massive driver is all."

Ron, something you said surprised me:
The Ultra remains the ultimate SVS (not counting the exotic design and finish of the SS subwoofer, which ONLY shares the Ultra driver,...
Looking at the pictures on the CS-Ultra and SS pages on your website, the drivers for each model would appear to be very different from one another. Am I missing something? :frowning:
