I would love to see all six seasons of CHIPS released.
Knowing who owns the rights is the first step though.
I thought it was MGM, then I heard Warner bought them out..
Anyone know for sure??

I believe it was MGM, and I believe Sony now owns MGM. So, it'd be Sony. Based on their track record, we'd be most likely to see a CHiPs boxset if they could tie it in with a CHiPs movie. I don't think one is in the works.

It was an MGM show so it is part of Warner now. The MGM that Sony bought owns the UA shows.

Mark To may be right, I'm not sure off the top of my head. I don't recall how much MGM's TV properties were included in that deal, and I can't think right now of what the cut-off year was for the property transfer to Warner. I'd have to research it.

IF it's still owned by MGM (that's a big "if"), then it really doesn't bode well. As far as Sony goes, stuff that's owned by MGM continues to be owned by them until the transaction for the sale is complete, which it is not. And things can still happen to make the transaction fall apart, of course.

MGM has been great with the Stargate releases, and the Green Acres and Mr. Ed releases were good enough, and the releases of Dead Like Me and original Outer Limits were outstanding. After that, their TV-on-DVD releases consist of Jeremiah and Hello, Kitty and the best-of stuff for New Outer Limits. Not a great track record for vast amounts of releases.

As far as Warner releasing it, if they own the rights: that would be great, but it might receive short shrift in 2005, a year in which Warner is celebrating THEIR 50-year history of television, not MGM's. I suspect that just about every TV show that WB releases throughout the year will primarily be from their own vaults, not an aquisition.

I hope I'm wrong about that, because I'd buy CHiPs in a heartbeat. So would a lot of readers at TVShowsOnDVD, where the series is ranked 122nd out of 6728 shows on the list! That makes it one of the top 2% of the series at our site...sounds like the nostalgia factor is there, and it would be a good seller.

Now that the Star Wars Trilogy has been released and The Petrified Forest is coming out in January, CHiPs has become my new holy grail for DVD. Let's hope it's not to far off.
