Does anyone know of a good Atari Emulator? I started searching around the Internet last night and found one called PCAE, but it didn't get along with my computer so well.

If anyone knows of a reliable emulator for the PC, I'd be grateful to know about it.

Thanks,
Todd

Huh. If this is against forum rules, then close it by all means. I had previously thought that the ROMs themselves were illegal, not the emulator itself. Oh well, live and learn.

i'm not sure. i would check the rules, but it is quite cluttered, i dont exactly know where to find them. but if the mods allow this to stay open, i can help you out with an emulator.

Emulators are legal. ROMS, unless you own the original cartridges, are not.
things that are legal and things that are allowed for discussion on the htf do not always match up. i'm not one of those amateur moderators, but i thought i remembered a thread about emulators being shut down, maybe i was wrong. and zophar.net has every emulator you could possibly want. i was so excited to play all those old apple II gs games i have without having to hook up that old computer (which i still have)

Well, thanks, folks, if none of these work, then I can't say I didn't try.

I tried to do some research on the subject, but couldn't find anything very current. Two specific articles are of some relevance:

and

I think it's kind of like MP3s -- you're perfectly free to devise a program that plays them, but to be legal you need to own the stuff you're playing. In my case, I own the Atari games I'd play on the PC. The reason I was jonesin' for the games was because I broke out the old system at my parents' for Thanksgiving, and I wasn't ready to give them up just yet.

Activision has put out titles for the PC (and a while ago, for the Mac) that contained a bunch of 2600 ports.

I think there's also a new PC program that has a bunch of Atari games, mostly ported 2600 ones.
