what is the drawback of a non-powered subwoofer? not sure if this is powered or no.

The sub is probably powered by the sixth amplifer channel in that 6.1 receiver (digital amp modules usually include a *pair* of channels). There's a Yamaha receiver+speaker package that also does this. Including the amp in the sub doesn't make the sub sound better and in the case of an HTiB, it just helps keep the price down.

No Subwoofer Pre Out means that it's more difficult to upgrade the subwoofer later on.
