I believe there were 2 UK discs. The 1st from 2001 doesn't appear to be anamorphic. There apparently was a 2 disc ltd. edition set with Mystery Train that's gone OOP and getting hard to find. I'd rather get the R2 Japanese version to avoid PAL speedup.
I have both the Japanese and the British versions of this film. The Japanese transfer is very nice, but the British version certainly isn't lacking. (It's 16x9 and anamorphic and is very low-priced compared to the Japanese version.)
The Japanese film came in a CD-size jewel box if that matters to you. Maybe they've changed it by now. You should be warned that the Japanese version only has the original language soundtrack used in the film and Japanese subtitles only. (Which are removeable.)
I'm assuming that your native language is English, and therefore you will have no problem with enjoying the first section of the film. But unless you understand French, Italian, and Finnish OR can read Japanese, you're going to have problems understanding the dialogue in the rest of the film since each section takes place in different parts of the world using the actual language which is spoken in those parts.
