    hi all -

i've been noticing pretty erratic server performance lately. especially yesterday. on occasion it was normal, but on many occasions the links were *extremely* slow - sometimes taking over 40 seconds to push through (if at all).

i also got that "server down" screen (although i think it says something different now?.)

it's acting kind of funky this morning too.

anyway, just an fyi. not sure if anyone else is having problems too.

    have a good one!

I noticed it was slow yesterday too. One time I got nothing but a drop-down "forum jump" page too. Attempting to jump anywhere using it just redisplayed the jump page again. That happened a few times last week too. I wonder if there was a database problem or something...

    Ted:

Yesterday was something else. I had to shut down the site about 5 times. When I shut down the site that is when you will see just the forum jump pull down menu and nothing else. We had a run away Apache process that had to be taken care of and some other tweaks on the database needed to be done.

The board seems to be running much better today.

FYI, I had some serious slowdowns around lunchtime today, say 12:45 ET 11-26.

Yep, we are still getting the slow downs. Hopefully this will improve some over the next few days.

I got the "forum jumpscreen" for about 20 minutes this evening. Everything was back to normal by about 6:20 p.m. EST.

    Folks,

First of all, I really want to apologize on behalf
of all of us here at HTF. None of you deserve to
come here and experience slowdowns like this.

The problem is not going to get better in the
immediate future. In fact, we expect it to get
    worse before it gets better.

The first problem is that we are signing up an
average of 50 new persons per day. The second
problem is my reviews with all their screenshots
that are generating the most hits here, and thus,
    slowing the board down.

We have been attempting to upgrade the board with
a new CPU, but for some reason, our tech has been
unable to get it to work.

Our next option is to do another donation drive
next year and have two new servers built for this
board. We still have money left from last year's
donation drive so we won't need as much (as far as
    I know right now).

Once again, I am sorry for the problems all of you
    are experiencing.

The situation with the server that we just bought is that for some reason it doesn't like running a dual CPU layout with the latest Linux kernel. So we are in the process of selling that server and having two dual CPU servers with 1G of RAM on each and running the web servers out of RAM. (The total size of the database is about 1.6G so running out of RAM should be a lot faster). In addition we have been bumping up against the limits of the line we are on and we are going to be moving to a larger pipe in the next few days. Travis wants to have his new lines in and running before he moves us over to them though.

The main situation, other than the server issue, is that our bandwidth usage has gone was up. Instead of the usual 1mbit of usage per day to about 3mbit a day. So triple the costs for bandwidth on our end too.

So.....we should have a couple of new servers to use for the web end, we are working on reducing our bandwidth requirements by reducing the size of the picture files we are using and looking into other options to reduce our bandwidth requirements.

All in all hopefully we should be ok for the near future but we may need to have another donation drive after the 1st of the year.

Thanks for all of your patience in this while we figure out our next steps in taking care of our system requirements and bandwidth issues.

    Parker

We need to put Ron's reviews on a server of their own, a big, superfast beast, that easily handles the enormous amount of bandwidth that's needed for those terribly popular pieces of hard labour.

Ron and Parker, thanks for your continued efforts here. While the delays can be frustrating at times, I will gladly deal with them since this site is still the best on the Internet for discussion of audio and home theater.

Can't live without my daily HTF "fix" man. Gotta have it.
Like Ted say, "we are your guests" ....and we appreciate the hard work you guys to make this the best it can be.
    Kudos

I too have noticed slowdowns over the past little while. One suggestion I have is to change the way Ron posts his reviews, by putting the images on a seperate page so they aren't loaded every time someone looks at the thread. Perhaps have only 1 or two shots of the packaging and screen grabs elsewhere. I agree that cutting down the resolution is also warranted.
