When I upgrade to Blu-ray now that the war is over. All new titles purchased will be Blu-Ray only. If there is only a DVD and not a Blu-Ray disk ill wait. This should not be that big of a deal because most of the catalog titles I want I have on DVD. A few key titles such as Lawrence of Arabia, Stanley Kubrick flms and the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy will be Blu-Ray double dips.

Since I bought a PS3 a few weeks ago I've been going through my collection and winnowing out DVD titles that are still fetching a decent price. Since so many were bought during the crazy online promotions I tend to make a profit on most titles. At this point, if the price is right, there isn't a DVD in my collection that I'd be unwilling to part with.

And while I intend to buy HD almost exclusively from here on out there are exceptions such as movies that I want to be able to play in the car for the kids or deals that are just too good to pass up.

I've never had a problem with double-dipping on DVD releases so upgrading to Blu-Ray is no different.

I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet but there are very few titles I'll want to rebuy (Star Wars, Indy, LOTR). 70% of my collection is TV box sets and I can't see how a Blu-Ray release of Kids in the Hall would give it a giant leap in quality.

I've got a pile of about 30 DVDs here I'll probably pawn next week in order to get a couple BDs. These DVDs are stuff I've already replaced with HD-DVD, fullscreen versions that I also bought the widescreen version of, and a couple I just know I won't watch again. I'm still waiting on my freebies from Toshiba so I can dump 5 more old DVDs. I've probably got other movies I'll never watch again, but I haven't been able to bring myself to get rid of them. One of those is the Steelbook of the 80's Dune. I really only ever watch the newer one.

Joe: I guess that means you're not so pleased about The Director's Cut getting a Bitsy for "Most Surprising Release" of 2007? ;)

Recently got more via Amazon Marketplace ($12) than I would have via Wherehouse or a b&m dealing in used for an SD DVD title I've long been reluctant to surrender (the Criterion The Rock). What with that coin and the Buena Vista rebate, it'll effectively be just a few dollars to get the BD. :emoji_thumbsup:

FAr from dumping, I've added a dozen SD DVDs to my collection in the past 10 days. I need several of them for class (no HDM at the college where I teach) and the rest were titles that were A) cheap and B) not likely to be out on HDM anytime soon. I check (except for the school related ones) if an HDM version is available, but I won't wait years if I want to have it now. My setup looks good enough with SD DVD to warrant the "immediate satisfaction".

Sure.

I do a careful survey before buying an SD DVD title to make sure it's not just around the corner on BD.

If it seems like it's years away, I might buy the SD copy if it's a movie I have to have. But if it's on the schedule for HDM and I can wait, then I save that cash towards the HD purchase (or sell off the DVD copy when the time comes to help offset the costs for upgrading).

BTW, just watched my Baron Munchausen Blu-ray Disc. Guys: a revelation of detail compared to the SD DVD. That's definitely a "don't kid yourself that you don't need to upgrade" title. The BD blows the DVD away... utterly and competely.

Yeah, I've been pre-ordering more and more SD lately. Older and long awaited titles unlikely to be out on HD anytime in the next 5-10 years.

Blu-ray just isn't satisfying all my movie needs so I see no reason to abandon SD purchasing anytime soon.

Besides it's shaping up to be another dismal High def summer release schedule (after June 3rd). Tho Fox just anounced the "cult classic"? Point Break

I hear you. While I haven't been pre-ordering all that many SD DVDs, I have bought two this past week (Lost Highway and The Mist), which is considerablly more than I have purchased in any given week in a while.

I also share your concerns with the summer Blu-ray Disc slate, but I'm cautiously optimistic that the Fall/Winter release schedule will make up for it. In the meantime, it isn't like I don't have a ton of stuff to watch that I've already purchased.

Hmm. What does "bitch-slapping" mean if you "survive" with a bare-bones release (ie wind up buying it anyway). The studio gets your money, so how are they "slapped" in a meaningful way?

Now that Criterion is embarking upon Blu-Ray, how long do you think it will be before all of the Alpha Video brand DVD ultra-rare pre-code titles in my collection will be released in HD? ;)

Wha? This is the first I've heard of this and there is no mention on their website. Do you have a cite?

I'm selling all my SD-DVD's for their HDDVD/Blu-ray counterparts. The ones which are carrying over all the extras, of course. But for the HDDVD's which aren't carrying over all the extras, I'm keeping the SDDVD.

"A Bleedin' Masterpiece!"

I have never ordered anything from England (amazon.uk or anyone else) before.

What does £17.98 translate to in U.S. dollars? Anyone know (approximately)? Will I pay through the arse for shipping? I would give it a shot for this title. It'd be fun! Does your bank convert the pounds to dollars when you pay by debit/credit card?

I'm w/ the others. Still buying an occasional DVD. It really depends on the situation. But yeah, I've also been meaning to start renting some again to help hold me over like I used to long ago. And in some cases, I'll probably keep the old DVD to go w/ the new BD for the extras that might be missing plus something to either lend out or be playable on the laptop (for road trips and such).

Mike i just discovered a site called Xploited Cinema the other day. It sells a bunch of import stuff. I got ABBA:The Movie, and Capricorn One for just a little over $60, R0 Blu-ray. I had both titles on Amazon. UK wishlist. But didnt want to pay for shipping and all that stuff, and the discs would have been $60, before shipping! Anyway i had been reading good things about Xploited, so i gave it a shot. By the way, they are out of Ohio, and shipping was under $3.
I dont see Sweeny Todd listed there yet, but i bet it will be. Much of what they have is French soft porn, or Italian westerns and horror...still, might be worth looking at.

I am actually thinking of dumping some of my SD-DVD's especially if they only have a standard DD track. I would only get rid of the SD-DVD if I have already replaced it with a HD counterpart. I am only considering it as I can sell of some of the SD-DVD's and reinvest that money into more HD titles. Some titles that are collectable editions I will keep no matter what. And I will keep the titles that I most likely will not rush out to buy on Bluray or titles that may not see Bluray ever. I do not have a DVD library like some of the other members here but enough to consider dumping some of the SD-DVD's.

To dump or not to dump, that is the question. ;)
