It's been a few years since I was there so I can't recommend hotels/ideas (I stayed at a friends house near Reno) but it's an amazing place. Stunning scenery. The drive up on Friday afternoon and back home on Sunday night is the exact opposite. A complete nightmare. Best bet is to leave very early Saturday morning (or anytime Friday Morning if you can skip work) and head back before noon on Sunday. Bring your camera.

What do you want to do? Gamble, see nature or how about a spa?

If spa I would recommend Resort at Squaw Creek.

Thanks guys! The ma in law would probably dig a spa type thing. I'd be in to the nature thing. We would be bringing our pooch so I guess we would need to find a hotel that accepts pooches.

Dave try this link and select the Contact Agent option. It has a box where you can add the information about needing a pet friendly location.

    http://www.squawvacations.com/

Sorry about the paste job but pathetically I don't remember how to insert links this morning.

Edit: Oh I see the software automatically makes it a link now. Hay you learn something new everyday.

My wife and I celebrated our 15th anniversary there in March 2005. We went there to snow ski so we stayed in South Lake Tahoe, a couple blocks from Heavenly ski resort. We skied at Heavenly two days and Squaw Valley for one day. Squaw valley is more for expert skiers though. I, not being an expert, spent a lot of the day on my arse. We stayed at a Roadway or something like that which wasn't fancy, but suited our purpose. We were also only a couple of blocks from State Line, NV and the casinos. We were so tired most nights though that we didn't do a lot of gambling. We mostly hung out outside a stir fry restaurant (can't remember the name) that had fires going and access to the bar. We met and talked with many people there and had a great time.

The drive to Squaw Valley was beautiful. It is in Truckee, CA which is about a 45 minute drive around Lake Tahoe.

The scenery is breathtaking. The mountains still had plenty of snow when we were there and every where you looked was a picture moment. We also got some great shots of the lake while skiing.

Hopefully you can go, Dave. You will not be disappointed.

Beautiful, beautiful area! Friends took us on a boat trip around and I got to stand at the spot where they shot some of The Godfather, Part II...I think I was the only one to appreciate that moment.

If it was just yourself and your wife going I might suggest the Fantasy Inn http://www.fantasy-inn.com/roomphotos.asp but since the dog is involved you might want to check http://tailsbythebay.stores.yahoo.net/laketahoe.html. Enjoy, hopefully it will be much cooler than it has been in the bay area!

oops! didn't see your in-law was coming too, Fantasy Inn is definitely not appropriate : ) Try riding the gondola at Heavenly, I believe you can catch it at the new Marriott complex on the South Shore.
