My Production Manager here at work is watching and burning this film right now so it got me thinking about the Special Edition due soon; aside from the Scorcese and gang commentary, should there be an improvement in the audio and video from the version thats out now? I gotta say, I dont usually get excited from Dolby Surround tracks, but the 2.0 one on Raging Bull isnt half bad for the budget they worked with; sure, dialogue is HORRENDOUSLY low in certain spots, but during the fight scenes, the crowd ambience slightly makes its way into the surrounds; its not a bad touch.

Should the 5.1 track on the SE be THAT much better? The video quality looked fine on this current version to me, too. My better half bought me the current version for my birthday last year, I think it was, and it has been serving me fine, but lately I have been taking a step back and re-evaluating my necessity for double dips on titles; the re-release of Christine this past Halloween I did not purchase because Columbia didnt seem to do anything with the audio track on it---same old congested 2.0 Dolby Surround; I also didnt buy into Daredevil Directors Cut for different reasons.

Should the Raging Bull SE be THAT much of an improvement in A/V?

Rob,

Did you find many faults with the current release and is that why you are anxiously awaiting the SE? I didnt seem to find many for a black and white film with a small budget; I am wondering if the 5.1 remix is going to improve the 2.0 track currently on the versions we have now.

After MGM's performance on the Rocky Anthology, I havent had my hopes up for stupendous audio delivery from any of the studio's titles.

There was plenty to fault with the original release certainly.

I have been waiting for a full blown SE release, and we will finally get it!

What did you find as faults, out of curiosity, because the current version seems to satisfy me pretty well.

A big difference if you have a widescreen TV is that this release will be 16X9 enhanced, while the original one isn't. That + the extras = me slobbering with anticipation. :D

The obvious huge one, already mentioned, is the fact it was not anamorphic. It was lacking in clarity, and had plenty of artifacts. Other than that, it was fine!

Okay, I hear you guys....I'm not running a widescreen set yet, so the picture looked fine to me. Im just worried what MGM will do with this "5.1" track after the audio on the Rocky box set sucked IMO...

I think there was a story in the production notes provided with the R2 Raging Bull Special Edition about the sound stems being destroyed by the sound designer, after creating the mix.

What will MGM remix from, or have I gotten the wrong end of the stick?

I wonder Scott, because while not a god awful, terrible Stereo Surround mix, the dialogue in the current version is somtimes downright incomprehensible...I mean whisper quiet. Then, the fight sequences open up and blow you off the couch because your system is up so !@#$%^((! high!

I can't wait for February 8. This is one of my
favorite all time films, and we get lots of good
extras, including the original commentary by Scorsese
and Thelma Schoonmaker on the Criterion CAV laserdisc.

:D

I've been harping on this for years.

You finally reach the point of saying "it's just not worth it anymore".

I am very much looking forward to Raging Bull. I have patiently held off from buying the current version. I just bought a new widescreen TV, so the SE being enhanced is now a requirement of mine.

I've held off on this for ever as well, waiting for the SE. I have it on preorder in the MGM Scorsese box, that includes this with "New York, New York SE" "The Last Waltz SE" and "Boxcar Bertha" , at DVDSOON for $30 Cdn. If you don't own the current Last Waltz and Boxcar DVDs, than you can't go worng with that price.
