I'd like to read some classic and Shakspearian summaries to understand whats going on without having to read the books. Even shorter than Coles notes, but then would like to move on to more in depth summaries or condensed versions.

Well I think they have Shakespear but even if they don't they have so many books summarized that I don't know what I would do without them.

Hope that helps.

There's a very good book, called The Oxford Companion to English Literature, which contains summaries and guides to practically every important book, play and poem ever written. I *think* there are similar ones for Irish, American and European literature as well.
