My wife is creating a VCD-style invitation for our daughter's first birthday. One of the things she's trying to do is take short samples of songs and put them into the photo slide show portion of it.

We're using the Movie Maker that comes with WinXP. It won't fade up/down the songs clips that are back to back.

Is there any piece of low-cost software that I might use to sample these MP3s, and then fade them up/down as I want to?

You can blow the MP3 back up to Wave files, and use something like Goldwave (do a google search to download the shareware) and then just edit the files, and put in fade-ins and fade-outs. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Once you are happy with the wave files, turn them back into MP3s.

Another thing to consider is during the editing process, make one wav file, fades and all, then convert it to one big mp3 file.
