I think about a year and a half I was scanning Barnes and Noble, and found a quite interesting paperback entitled South. It was a very enthralling read.

In the last 2 weeks, I got email from A&E on the airing of Shackleton. I made a note to see it, but couldn't resist picking it up at Best Buy on Friday. The story of the Endurance expedition and Kenneth Branagh made it a no brainer.

I have exhaustively watched it this weekend and found it magnificent. Good acting, good cinetography and a great score.

The first DVD details the funding for the expedition, and the voyage south until Endurance was ice-locked.

The second DVD details the trials of the expedition up to their rescue.

The third DVD has 3 good features. I just finished watching the last.

For anyone interested in the exploration of the Antarctic, and the struggle of man against nature I recommend it. The last documentary, Antarctica, goes into some extremely good depth about the exploration of that continent. I never realized what an idiot Scott was until I watched it.

I just got the silent 1914 film "South" from Image

and Mildstone in and it is a nice disc.

If you like silent movies, it is a very nice presentation.

Picture is very clear, tinting is plesant, score is appropriate.

The commentary track is very useful and turns the silent film

into a documentary of sorts.

Could be considered a nice supplement,

but a bit pricy at $21+.

I saw bits of it. Unfortunately, for something like that, the movie pales in comparison to the documentary. There was so much awesome photography and diaries, I found the documentary was so good that looking at the clips of the movie was disappointing. I'll still check it out though.

Either way, be sure to find the documentary too if you do watch the movie. Its really good.

Any word if the IMAX feature "Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure" is coming to DVD? I much preferred it to the A&E movie.

I wonder if thats what I saw. It was on cable up here a few weeks ago. It has that man and woman who are sailing around. Is that the same one?

It looks like the Mildstone Edition of the 1914 "South"
will be released in the UK by the BFI.
The UK R2 DVD specs reads the same as the US R1 edition
with the added bonus of recently discovered footage of the
ill-fated Ross Sea Party, with commentary by Polar
historian Kelly Tyler and a map of the Expedition with
narrative by Kelly Tyler.
See;

The little extra over the US edition sounds nice, but the
$20UK works out to be $30US, a bit much for me to buy it
again.
