It seems as if nearly all studios have been putting the brakes on SE releases. I have held off the current Raging Bull release thinking the new one is coming soon.
I read a while back at "theBits" that Raging Bull SE will be coming out sometime soon and I have been waiting on pins and needles. Also the GOODFELLAS SE for next fall, does anyone know what we can expect on it?? I hope it will be as good as Cape Fear SE. Also I recall a Carlito's Way SE was supposed to be in the works, any info on that anyone? anyone? And one other thing of interest to me and I hope many others, is there any chance EVER that BILOXI BLUES will be released. That is one of my all time favorite films, not to mention Neil Simon related films. Anyway any info would be great.
I remember reading several months ago that Henry Hill, the real-life counterpart to Ray Liotta's character in GOODFELLAS, was on Howard Stern and mentioned he had just finished recording a commentary for a new GOODFELLAS dvd...
That should be one interesting commentary!! Now if only Scorsese will do one too
Yeah, I don't know what happened to that Raging Bull: SE. It was supposed to be released last year (according to an MGM chat in 2001 I believe). Since then, the talk about it has vanished. Weird.
I wonder what happened to all the other MGM Special Editions that were supposed to come out last year - especially Fargo: SE and The Great Escape: SE (in addition to Raging Bull :SE).
I believe these are on their way. Scorsese's involvement would have been understandably delayed since he was touching up Gangs throughout the year. But now that Gangs is in the theater, I would assume the the pace on these titles (the Scorsese SE's) will pick up.
Frustration is setting in with me and MGM. I've waited and I've waited for the special edition of RAGING BULL since it was rumored nearly 3 years ago. Again there have been rumors of it coming in 2003.
Just today the Digital Bits listed their update for MGM releases through May/June of this year.
Nothing about RAGING BULL; zip, zero, nada.
What should I make of this? Is this title just going to be permanently off now? I'm getting the feeling that it's never gonna see the light of day... it sure seems that way, at least.
Yes, I'd expect a slew of Scorsese films later this year, much like that De Palma frenzy back in mid-2001.
I'm hoping beyond hope that Universal release a special edition of Casino or, even better, license it out to Criterion. Am I the only one who thinks it a finer film than GoodFellas (a great film though that is)?
While "Casino" is stylistically brilliant, the characters are pretty shallow and the movie follows the all-too-typical mob plot formula: act I: everyone is friendly, the money is pouring in; act II: people become greedy and begin to betray each other. Things begin to go to hell; act III: their greed and the FBI destroy everything, lots of people get taken out, the anti-hero comes out ok, but good times are clearly over.
