I would think that with Peter Jackson getting ready to start preproduction on his "reimagining" of King Kong that we would hear something from Warner Brothers Home Video regarding their much-delayed release of the original on DVD.

I realize that, like with Citizen Kane, the restoration work is taking much longer than was originally thought. However, they've already missed the boat on getting this title out in time for its 70th anniversary (which was in April)...I just hope they don't make us wait until 2005 (when Jackson's version is scheduled for release). This film is one of the greatest horror films of all time and it deserves to be out.

So, with that said...has anyone heard anything new?

It'll be released some time in 2004.

To be honest, I'm wondering if the delay had something to do with LDI switching to 4K. They hinted at that a while ago... and a 4K restoration would allow the film to have a brand new negative.

Can anyone explain to me how WB has the rights to the King Kong movie if universal is making the next one?

Turner, too put another "TURN" on this title, released it on VHS.
    Correct?
Who put it out in R2 (in 2002, I believe)?

Universal seem to have retained the rights in Europe (along with the rest of the RKO films)and a DVD version of the original is available in the UK which is watchable but very grainy.

Yes, I believe that Turner had bought the RKO library a long time ago, and it was all rolled into Warners when he went there.

I thought that I had heard that there was some kind of agreement with Criterion to use some of their supplements. I hope that's true.

Since the next Kong movie is going to be a Universal production, I wonder if that's going to inspire them to release new DVDs of the two Kong-Toho 60s flicks they still control rights to, King Kong vs. Godzilla and King Kong Escapes. The former deserves a widescreen release to replace the P/S Goodtimes one while the latter has never had a DVD release.

I thought I read somewhere that Universal's rights to both films last for 40 years beyond the release date. That might rule out "King Kong vs. Godzilla" but would still leave "King Kong Escapes" under their control until 2008.

I'd love to get the modern remakes of Kong on DVD as well, since KK Lives is not even on DVD and the "original" is in a rather poor edition I understand. :b

I don´t know about Behlmer´s commentary on the Criterion LD, but the one he does in Adventures of Robin Hood is surely a recent one.

King Kong was released on DVD in some places, including Brazil, but I´m eager to get my hands on the restored version.

Just compare the first brazilian DVD edition of CITIZEN KANE, bootlegged by Continental Video, to the Warner one. It´s like comparing the taste of chicken with the taste of shi... cken.
