I really would rather have a Mac, but the salesman suggested the Sunfire.
Depends completely on what your listening preferences are. The Mac and the Sunfire are totally different beasts. The Mac is only 2 channel, and probably doesnt come with a remote, while the sunfire is a ht pre/pro. If you only want a pre for 2 channel listening, go and do a test between the two instead of being overly swayed by the salesman, as he probably makes a bigger commission on the Sunfire than the Mcintosh.
The McIntosh C-39 is a stereo and Dolby Pro-Logic preamp, and was discontinued in 1998.
McIntosh's current home-theater pre-pro, assuming that's what you're looking for, is the MX-134, which retails for $7000. Its predecessor, the MX-132, which does not have the latest surround formats and various other features, may be still available in some stores at a close-out price. Check out mcintoshlabs.com's "Support" section for detailed info about both units.
