Title pretty much says it. Any chance of a R1 playable Battle Royale? An offical Asian R0 would be fine so long as it had English subs and menus.

No chance right now. The companies interested in it say that Toei wants too much $$

An english trans of the novel comes out next week

The Korean R0 is the best disc out there, the UK SE has translated extras, but the transfer on the film is totally screwed up

I was just going to start a topic about this. I want to see Versus get released too. I think the reason why this hasn't come out is because of the "violent nature" and the money. Personally I don't think this film is that violent, I've seen much more violence in films before.

The fact that it's kids killing kids has kept it off Miramax's radar. No major label would want it for that reason too. Media Blasters has Versus, but Toei wants a HUGE dollar figure for BR that the companies that can take the press just can't afford.

I know for a fact that 3 or 4 companies have tried to get it, and frankly, the market is so eroded by the easily gotten UK and Korean R0 NTSC versions that it's really not even worth their time anymore.

Perhaps when BR2 comes out this summer, someone may be able to get a package deal.

Dunno, I think the delay is in getting the anamorphic transfer from Japan

If you can live without the extras being subtitled in English, I would definitely recommend getting the 2-disc R0 Korean DVD. The anamorphic transfer is excellent and the DTS sounds great. I would've loved to check out the extras on the second disc, but it was the movie I wanted, so I'm a happy camper.

If you have a region-free PAL to NTSC player, I'd personally recommend the Tartan 2-disc SE. The transfer isn't as good from what I understand and it's not the extended version, but frankly I think the original cut is better and at least the extras are comprehensible to non-Japanese/Korean-speakers. Although if you don't have a DVD player that can handle it the Korean set is probably the best bet.

erm Tartan UK offer an Region free NTSC version of the film, which is the second release of BR. I believe their intentions with this was to get it out to the US market. Since NTSC discs are hardly ever sold in UK. This disc has the best picture for any UK release and has removable eng subs.

Wow, the UK one costs 3 times what the Hong Kong version does. Any place to get that ships to the US for a fairly decent price?

There are 3 versions of BR by Tartan, all of which have some issue or another

PAL/Anamorphic/DD 2.0 bare bones. 2.0 only for some reason

NTSC/Anamorphic/DD 5.1 "Progressive Scan" (it's not, it's called "Gee the yanks can't get BR, We make it R0 and... [IMG] )

    PAL/Anamorphic/DD 5.1 Special Edition (Director's Cut)

Transfer is actually SLOWED DOWN 4%, it has an equal drunning time with the NTSC version, it's all very very odd

This is the only place for subtitled extras (Warning, some are NOT subbed)

Your best bet on price and quality is the Korean R0 version

Just wanted to confirm something before I ordered from DVDAsian.com: is the version that they carry that David mentions above the NTSC Region 0 version? It doesn't say anything anywhere on the page about it, and I'd like to know before I plunk down any money on this one.

Yes it is. It even says Region All if you scroll all the way down.

Just ordered the Korean Director's cut of Battle Royale, How's it stack up against the theatrical cut?

It's the cut that got the R-15 (no one under 15) rating in Japan, extra blood and some extra scenes that flesh out some characters better

alright, now all I need are Avalon, Versus, and Ichi the Killer

Hmm, isn't Miramax sitting tight on Avalon right now? should I import or wait patiently?

Avalon is supposed to be shown on US cable this year, I fear what Harvey Scissorhands will do to Oshii's film, considering I'm positive they bought it thinking it was an action movie rather than a much more cerebral piece. Personally I'm predicting a minimum of 30min of cuts and of course it'll be dub-only and probably rescored, despite its beautiful score by Kenji Kawai, one of his best ever

There is a non-anamorphic HK version that runs about $10 (R0) and an R0 Korean version that has all the extras and DTS (anamorphic) but only the movie has English subs.

Avalon had just as flawless a transfer as Episode 2 2 years earlier IMO. It's absolutely breathtaking
