I'm sure it's been discussed, but Region 2 Japan has Ronin: Ultimate Edition that not only has DTS but also several featurettes that we obviously don't have here. Since MGM seems to be rereleasing some of their older titles, is there any chance of Region 1 seeing any thing like the R2 Japanese version, or something close to it?

Would be cool to see this release. It would give me a great excuse to buy it. I love those chases in that movie. What was in that case?!?

Ronin 2 disc SE with DTS is being released in Europe in October... I think this has a lot more features than the Japanese UE. I assume a R1 release will happen eventually.

These are the special features of the new dvd:
    - Frankenheimer Commentary
    - Featurette ”In The Cutting Room With Tony Gibbs”
    - Featurette ”Natascha McElhone: An Actor’s Process”
    - Featurette ”Composing the Ronin Score”
    - Featurette ”The Driving of Ronin”
    - Featurette ”Filming in the Fast Lane”
    - Featurette ”Cinematography of Ronin”
    - Featurette “Venice Interviews”
    - Alternate ending
    - Galleries
    - Trailer

The bonus featurettes run approx. 120 mins in total.

Thats more than any other edition thus far. I believe the R2 Japan release had the following in addition to a DTS track:

-Audio Commentary on key scenes (27:55)
-Featurette ”Natascha McElhone: An Actor’s Process” (13:36)
-Featurette ”Composing the Ronin Score” (11:52)
    -Alternate ending (1:45)
    -Animated Photo Gallery (3:32)
    -Orignal Theatrical Trailer (2:11)

Also, if you want Subtitles for the foreign language parts you have to manually turn them on and off. It still had subtitles available in English and Japanese though.

Even if MGM does a SE or 2-Disc, much of it will depend on if they include the DTS track, or even a new transfer (nothing is wrong with the current one, IMO). But it at least needs some upgrade in the A/V department to warrant an upgrade or repurchase.

If we get the same release as either the Japan or European sets, then I see no argument there. They sound like solid editions for this film.

There's limited information, even after everything there is to know is revealed. We never get to find out what's in the case. We never really get to know who these men are, especially DeNiro's character.

Would be nice if a SE DVD included a featurette:

    ”What's in that case?”

    But, I don't give a damn. [IMG]

I always thought DeNiro's character was

part of the CIA, perhaps a spy or some kind of agent for them

I could be wrong, but some things about his character in the movie sort of revealed this.

Either way, a solid film all the way.

    Mark,

Thanks for the heads up! But, I'm always a bit hesitant purchasing R2 dvds though due to fear of PAL speedup (I'm not even sure I would notice it because I have the entire Friends series in PAL and I have had no problems with them) and the shipping costs (because I'm a cheap bastard[IMG] )

Has anyone heard of news of an R1 release yet?!?

I was gonna hold out for the R1 SE but the (UK) R2 was going cheap so I snapped it up. You guys are gonna love the dts track (when it finally emerges on R1) because it's a killer!!

I bought the UK R2 version as well and I love it, even the digipak packaging is cool.
