For me it would be horror, westerns, and classic movies. I keep looking for them, but for some reason I never do buy them. I need to force myself to someday.
I'm a bit lean on the comedies too, but this is not a surprise. I'm VERY picky about what I consider funny. So I no doubt will continue to have this catagory lean in terms of sheer numbers due to my pickiness!
1. great films that haven't yet been released on dvd (at least not in OAR)
2. great films I haven't seen yet
In other words, every great film (IMO) I've seen, that's on dvd, is on my shelf.
As far as the smallest portion of my collection:
Westerns - only 10 Silent films - only 12 Horror - only 19
but that's because I've only seen 10 westerns worth owning that are available on dvd.
I thought drama would be one of my holes, since that genre includes tons of films that I hate. Indeed most of the films I truly hate, as oppose to just dislike, are dramas. But there are still a lot of good ones, and I have 63 in my collection.
I don't really consider foreign language films to be a genre, and have counted them in their respective genres (e.g., Mon Oncle in comedy), but I do have relatively few such films, only 20 something.
Actually, in a strange way, the biggest hole in my collection is comedy. It's true that I have more comedy films than any other genre (297), but it's also true that the most films I want, which aren't on dvd, are in comedy (43 wanted films)
Its interesting that Comedy seems to be a recurring theme in this thread. I suppose its why they say comedy is so hard to do well. I agree with many who have said that much of the drek released lately as comedy, just wouldn't bear repeated viewings. I think I may focus on classic comedy to fill the hole, starting with The Doris Day collection.
I understand why Westerns are also a continuing theme. Interest in that genre as a whole, has subsided since the 70's. Todd
While I wouldn't consider these gaps (which would be something I'd have a desire to fill in), there are areas that would prevent my collection from being considered "well rounded" by some. But what do I care, I'm not building a public video library.
Musicals - don't really care much for the genre. The 3 I own are more for my wife.
Documentaries - These don't have much replay value for me.
Silents - I only own 4. 3 of which are German expressionist which are the ones I prefer.
TV - Never really had a desire to collect TV shows probably because I was never a big tv show viewer.
Melodramas & indie/arthouse fare - Just not my thing.
I'm not building a public video library either. I could find a lot of areas of weakness in the sense that there are lots of genres and sorts of films that have a weak representation in my collection - like movies from the past 25 years... But I set my own priorities and I think I dare say there isn't much weakness in what I've got.
I think the wife would say I am missing chick flicks. I have slimmed down my collection to about 300 and there isn't a single Movie that is really of any interest to her.
our shared viewing comes from the TV on DVD shelf.
At 1,920+ titles....I feel my library is both well balanced and well fed.....at least for my personal tastes and passions. I'm still missing around 400 titles, either because they are not yet on dvd or I have neglected to pick up yet. I only spend tips on my library so I can only feed it lots-o-snacks when the $ is there. Usually, this means 6 to 10 a week, but sometimes just a few.
As far as horror goes.....it's obvious I like stinky cheese. Could'nt live without my horror. I just don't buy "newer" horror...unless it's from outside the U.S..
I need more nunsploitation films and more swashbuckling. But like I said....I'm missing many titles and the fight for a totally complete personal library is a never ending brawl.
I've only got two horror films. Scream and Halloween. I'm not lacking in comedy, though. I have everything from Monty Python, Farrely Bros, the ZAZ (Airplan, Naked Gun) team, South Park, Mel Brooks....I like to laugh. What can I say. I have two westerns also...Unforgiven and Young Guns. I guess the most I'm lacking is Porn. Don't have any porn titles.
The bigesst weaknesses in my collection are musicals and pre-60s stuff in general. I don't own a single Bogart title, no Cagney, no Erroll Flynn, no classic film noir, no Chaplin or Keaton. No silent movies. Maybe I should at least buy that Casablanca special edition.
okay, a bratwurst... but with the Errol Flynn Signature Collection being released tomorrow, I fully expect you to cross at least that name off your list in the very near future!
I'm proud to say my collection is extremely well rounded incorporating drama, comedy, musicals, westerns, horror, science fiction, foreign films, silent films, film noir, the best of Classic Hollywood and contemporary fare, both studio and independent.
So, what am I deficient in? Cartoons ... or animated if that's what you prefer to call 'em. I've got a few but basically it's an area I have no interest in and have no intention of plugging up the gaps.
