Just checked Sonic Frontiers site and it seems that the AVM 20 is now shipping. Anyone has one on order? If so please let us know your findings on the sound quality of the unit.
    Thanks.

I'm interested, but not excited. I'd like to see some user feedback before I break out the donuts and Duff.

I'm more excited about the upcoming Tag 192, but there is a big money difference. It won't be out till spring so I have time to get some reviews on the new crop of prepros

Found out some info from another forum that the avm-20 will have a chip upgrade available in 2 months or so for DPLII. Motorola are working the kinks out of the chip right now.
The upgrade will be in the $100 range or so.

I gave the AVM-20 quite a bit of thought, before buying the Integra Research RDC-7. Here were my thoughts:
    Pros for the AVM-20:
    - Full ability to convert between digital and analog sources for recording.
    - Real analog and multi-ch inputs (instead of the DB-25 input on the RDC-7).
    - Bass management on analog direct sources.
    - About $1000 cheaper than the RDC-7.
    Cons on the AVM-20:
    - Heard some bad stories about the quality of the AVM-2.
    - Only two component video inputs (3 on the RDC-7).
    - No Dolby Pro-Logic II, and no clear upgrade path. Some talk about having to do a chip upgrade, which is not what you want to have to go thru right after you buy a new piece of equipment. This is actually very important - I have been shocked with how good PLII is, and couldn't imagine going back to PL.
    - No optical digital output (RDC-7 has both optical and coax).
    - Last but not least, the RDC-7 got a AAA rating from SGHT - only two other HT preamps got that, which were both over $10,000 (I'm sure that the Lexicon MC-12 will also get it, but that too is much more expensive).
If people disagree with this, I'd love to hear it - I'm sure that many of my points are not correct, for a variety of reasons!

I'd be interested to know more about this unit. I've had good luck with other Sonic Frontiers gear. Getting close to putting my HT together.

I am waiting for my AVM20 and will report findings in the next week or so..
    As for the aforementioned 'cons':
    - I spoke with a 'pilot' dealer who's had the AVM20 through its final development said that it's 'miles ahead' of the AVM2 in both function and quality. (I hope he's right)
    - I think the DPLII upgrade path is quite clear.. The AVM20 is hardware and software upgradeable while the AVM2 was not (or was limited). I've got no qualms about swapping a new board in to get the new features.
I'll let you know how my testing goes..

I look forward to reading the findings once someone hear reports on it. I had the AVM2 and loved it. I sold it in order to buy the AVM20 since there was no h/w upgrade path available. My decision has come down to the AVM20 or the RDC-7 units. I have read nothing buy good things on the Integra Research RDC-7. Now lets see what we hear/read/learn about the new Anthem AVM20.

I am looking for a new Pre/Pro and was seriously thinking about the RDC-7 but the AVM-20 looks like a pretty good deal. I can not find the web site of the product as Sonic Frontiers site does not seem to be working? From the one picture I saw on another site it looks to have balanced outputs? Can some one confirm this? If anyone finds reviews or picks this unit up I would be very interested in the results.

    Mark,
    It does have balanced outputs.
The website is very flaky - over the last few months there have been many occasions where it is not up and running - just in case:

I was faced with the same decision too, and ultimately chose the RDC-7 (for reasons which I gave earlier in the thread).
Let us know what you decide.
