At what altitude did the engine fall off? This is something very hard to plan for but is a fuel tank dump one of the first things to do in a case like this?

Per NPR, investigators now believe the pilot did indeed dump fuel before the crash.

quote: Per NPR, investigators now believe the pilot did indeed dump fuel before the crash.[/quote]Unfortunately that is impossible. An A300 Airbus does not have the ability to dump fuel. It is not part of the design of the aircraft. A 330 and 340 have the ability to, but a 300/310 do not. This can be confirmed by the FAA and the designers of the aircraft.
Even so, how would a pilot or co-pilot be able to issue a fuel dump while trying to struggle with keeping the plane airborne after the caastrophic loss of an engine?

I'm not saying that RicP is wrong, I have no idea, and personally I distrust early information in cases like this. But many sources are indeed stating that this plane began dumping fuel immediately after lift-off over Jamaica Bay. One source cited by cable news channels is the U.S. Coast Guard.

What concerns me, that CNN is now reporting on, is why the vertical stabalizer tail section was found floating in Jamaica Bay, cleanly separated from the fuselage.

Could this have caused by a bird strike? I remember seeing a documentary some months ago, about how dangerous the skies were over the NY area because of the three airports in a relatively small area combined with the (apparently high) risk of birds flying into the engines.

I was on jury duty today, and walked into the central jury room around 8:30am, just a few minutes after the crash. It was already on CNN, which was playing silently on two TV's on either side of the room. The clerk finally came in and turned up the volume...it was rather chilling to have a room full of 300 people suddenly become quiet to hear the news. Then people started calling out on ther cell phones to get more information.
If this is foul-play, I think that airports are going to be ghost-towns over Thanksgiving.

Well, I can tell you this: no foul play is gonna fuck up my holyday (new year) travel plans. I have travelled since 9/11 and I am making reservations as we speak.

Scott, I'll second your concern, but want to add that they pulled one of the wings out of the bay too, yet both engines landed south of the bay. How did they do that?

I agree ... how does the tail (looked pretty intact) end
up in the bay and the engines on shore? It just seems
pretty strange that this section separated earlier.
Also, I also believe that there was not a fuel dump.
This will definitely have a lot of people on both
sides of the story but I am definitely stating my thoughts
    and not fact.

Holadem, I understand and admire your conviction to not change your plans in the wake of recent events. Let's hope the rest of the traveling public is also as brave.

Agreed, this could not have happened at a worse time, those poor people are going through enough already.
But hey, IF it was terrorists, fine, were just going to pound them longer and harder!

I'm wondering if perhaps the US suspected the plane and shot it down ... Which was also the rumor about Flight 93 which has received no press since 9/11 ...

First off, my condolences to the family and friends of he people killed in this disaster.
Do we have any details as to why the plane was initially delayed before take-off?
I fear that this may have been an act of terrorism, although I hope not. It would be all too easy for someone to loosen a few bolts.

He has gotten exactly what he wanted. So far, the US has managed to catch, bomb or kill exactly 0 terrorists, while Bin Laden's case among his followers is growing stronger and stronger.
I'm very happy this was, by all accounts, not a terrorist act.
