It was an American airlines 767 plane headed to JFK airport..

It seems there is one eyewitness who saw fragments falling from the sky before the plane crashed which could mean that there was an explosion on the plane before it went down. This was said on "ARD" (German Television).

In 1979, an engine fell off American Flight 191 (a DC-10) as it took off from O'Hare. The plane rolled and crashed just outside the airport perimeter. Don't have a TV today but the early reports sound eerily similar.
