Annoying crackling on Onkyo TX-NR905 in most listening modes (1 Viewer)

I am experiencing a recent audio problem - loud crackling when I switch my TV decoder through the amp. The crackling changes between listening modes on the NR905 and I have switch between the modes until I find one that produces clean audio (usually the "Direct" mode. Any idea what is causing this? Is it likely to be the amp or decoder or a problem cable? I would appreciate the advice on this.
