Hello eveyone,
this is my first post, so here goes: I just purchased a set of NHT 2.5i towers, 1.5 bookshelfs for the rears and have a audio center 1. I am running the set up off of a Yamaha RX-V663 and want to run a amplifier for the towers because they are really power hungry. Any suggestions? I'm not sure weather to run a 2 channel amp to the woofers and have the receiver run the highs or just get a amp to run the speakers full range without bi-amping them. thanks...

I don't have a lot of experience with amps but I would go with a good two channel amp for the fronts. If you really want to bi-amp your fronts, the concensus seems to be that you should use two identicle amps for bi-amping and use the avr for the center and surrounds. But I've often wondered if using a three channel amp for use with the center speaker as well would be even better (?).

Well after some searching I have found a guy in my area selling two Adcom GFA-555 amps for $300 each. I guess they are 200x2 and bridgable to 600x1, anyone think thats a goo deal?

Also I I do a mix of 50 home theater and 50 music, and I do like to play my stuff loud. No sub yet but plan on getting one soon. Thanks

One question. Why do you think the towers are more power hungry then the others?

You have to be careful about the impedance of speakers when you bridge an amp. If the speakers are lower then 8 ohm impedance, I wouldn't do it, unless you want to risk frying your amp. The Adcom 555 are great amps, but I really doubt you need to bridge them. Does your receiver have pre-amp outputs? BTW, you can't bi-amp the way you originally suggested.

The impedence of the speakers are 6 ohms and I am not bridging them, I'm thinking of picking up both amps and using one for the mains and using the other for a subwoofer, I know someone selling two of them for $300 each.

If you don't have a sub yet, why not just buy a powered sub instead of a passive one to use w/ the 2nd Adcom? I'm not too sure, but I don't think there's any real advantage to running a passive sub w/ a good amp -- in fact, seems like you'd be disadvantaged trying to find a *good* passive sub period.

Man has a point. The Adcoms would be great for the main channels, and center, for that matter. They are kind of wasted on a sub. You are better off with a powered sub, or for the same $300 you can get a much more powerful sub amp brand new, with the advantage of built-in crossovers, phase adjustments, volume control, auto-on and so on.

The Adcoms are great sounding well built amps, using your receiver as a preamp and the amps to power your fronts is a an awesome Idea. I would get a self powered sub instead of using the adcoms. You can pick up a Velodyne for around $350.00

good luck and happy hunting

Cool thanks for the ideas, I'm definetly going to buy one of them and use it for my mains, and the sub will be step 2.
