I am running a yamaha rx-v630 receiver. When in speaker setup in the menu i select subwoofer and it gives the option of either 'main' or 'both'. when on 'both' my subwoofers work fine and when on 'main' they don't work, in stereo or surround. any ideas?

there actually should be a third selection your choices should be Sub, Main, or both.

Sub= base frequencies will only be sent to the sub
Main= no sub
Both is used if your speakers are capable of lower frequencies.

Normally it's set to Sub, unless you have large drivers in you mains make sure your fronts speakers are set to "small".....

If you have large drivers and lower frequency range in your fronts then you can set it to both.
and make sure in the setup that the front speakers are set to "large"

You should have all the above options in the setup menu, I don't have your manual in front of me right now, but it's the most common in yamaha receivers to have all the above options.
