I have a pair of the original Hsu subs. The SW10. They are very basic and kind of flimsy, unpowered cylinders with 10" drivers, but they perform decently. I have always powered them with regular stereo amps, but I don't currently have any spare amps which have as much power as a sub really requires. There is no way I am going to buy a powerful enough stereo amp, but it occurred to me I could probably get a plate amp pretty cheap which would provide a lot more power than I have now. Even though the little 60wpc Carver I am using now does a surprisingly good job, I still see the clip lights flash from time to time. This is my small system, which is in the family room, so an insane amount of power is not really needed.

Anyway, I looked at the offerings from Parts Express and was hoping some of the folks in this section might be able to give some suggestions. I see a BASH and a Dayton in the $125-150 range which should fit the bill nicely. What I want to do is basically use this as an external amp to drive both subs, which are 8 ohm. So, it looks like I can run both subs in parallel with no problem. The Dayton SA240 has the benefit of being fully enclosed, but it doesn't look like it has a bypass/LFE input, which is pretty important. I don't want to run the risk of cascading crossovers and the max 180 Hz filter doesn't sound like the way to go to me. The BASH 300S has the LFE input as well as a power switch, which I don't see on the Dayton, but I can't tell from the shots on the site if it is enclosed. I'm guessing it isn't and I'd have to fashion some kind of housing. I also don't know if heat is a problem with it, since it doesn't have an external heat sink.

All considered, the BASH looks like the choice of the two. Does anyone have any suggestions of other amps I might look at? My main requirements are stability at 4 ohm, bypass/LFE input and auto on/off.

Heat - Don't worry about it. The BASH amps are extremely efficient and don't heat up much.
Enclosure - A simple wooden box wll work.
Crossover - The crossover in the amps without an LFE input is not an issue. We (the forum) have been using these amps for years without any problems.
Stereo amp - The Behringer A500 would also work. No box to build. No crossover to worry about. 160w x 2 into 8 ohms. $199 at PE. Musicians Friend has a refurb for $170
Auto on - ALL of the plate amps have it.
