From what I understand there is bad blood between the director and New Line Cinema. Maybe because of the subject matter? Can anybody shed some light on this situation?

If I recall correctly, the director was quite upset about the changes Edward Norton made to the film in the editing room. Also, there was some brouhaha because the director wanted to change gears in post-production, because inspiration had struck and he had "found" the story he wanted to tell. There's an interview with the guy somewhere on the net. If I can dig it up, I'll post the URL.
EDIT: Here's the interview. Quite a... Character, that guy.

Yah...Tony Kaye is a bit of a nut. He tried to take his name off of the film when he found out that Edward Norton was doing some editing. It was his first feature film, and he wanted final cut...yah, that's realistic :D
