Would someone be able to help with confirm I’m playing Dolby Atmos sound with the Yamaha 7850? I’m not using a 4K TV as that shouldn’t matter as the DVD is going straight into the receiver. Here is my set up

UHD/4K , Hi Res Sony UBPX800 DVD player.
Avengers End Game UHD w/Dolby Atmos
Hi speed 18gbps 2.1 cable plugged into receiver
Regular HDMI to non 4K TV (1080P)
All Klipsch speakers LRC, bookshelf as surround LR, RP-500SA Dolby atmos speakers using as front presence , atmos selector is on (not surround)

When I switch the receiver to 7channel stereo, the movie sounds the best and I get the following encoding display (PCM) and the Cinema DSP icon

3298166b-ebbb-4f53-90de-41c0fcfc4f33-jpeg.67576

When I switch the receiver to surround I get the following displayed

5a8dd46a-bc56-4bb5-a200-b2d69dc3993b-jpeg.67577

my DVD player doesn’t have bitstream as the output, only PCM. The player is DTS:x and Atmos capable

From the receiver manual it reads as if it’s displaying the Cinema DSP, then it’s playing presence effects.
The surround setting doesn’t sound as good and seems lower volume and not as good effects playing on 7channel stereo.
How do I know I’m playing at atmos effects?

Sony players do not have a setting for bitstream, per se. The setting is either PCM or Auto. For Atmos, the setting should be Auto, and secondary audio should be turned off.

Also, 7-channel Stereo mode on your receiver is what many refer to as a "party mode" and is usually only used for playing music in a whole house or "party" setting where your main goal is to get sound out into a large area. It sends a stereo signal to all speakers, and is not a real surround mode.

Thanks for the response. I kept messing with the settings and when I play an official Dolby Atmos demo reel through a USB from the player, the receiver displays Atmos like it’s playing Dolby Atmos, I play Dolby digital and Dolby true HD demo reels and the receiver seems to reflect the encoding that the source is.
When I play avengers on the 7ch stereo mode I get the PCM as the decoder, when playing on DSURR , it displays the Dd logo, assuming Dolby digital 5.1

why wouldn’t Avengers play in Atmos? Does anyone else see Atmos displayed on their receiver when playing an Atmos movie?

DVD selected time Atmos

displays the DD logo when receiver switched to DSURR

Pressing the Audio button on the dvd remote seems to display the wrong audio than what I selected on the DVD menu?

Just FYI - the Blu-ray player will never display "Dolby Atmos" when pressing the info or display button, but Dolby TrueHD 7.1 instead. Atmos is delivered within a Dolby TrueHD bitstream to the receiver and the receiver does the decoding.

Glad you got it working!

One other question. You mentioned the 7ch vs SURRDECODE which is the “program” the receiver can toggle, also has things like Hall, Cellar, Sports sound themes. The only two that I’ve been using is the 7ch and SURRDECODE. Both now say Atmos but when using SURRDECODE the rear surround speakers (smaller bookshelf) and the RP500 SA atmos speakers hardley have volume coming from them. The amp sector is 5.1.2 +Zone 1 and party mode is another setting, I can do which send to all speakers. So I think it’s properly playing all 7 channels. I’ve been adjusting the individual speaker volume settings to fine tune it. I did use the Yahama YAPO microphone you calibrate the system and it didn’t do a great job.
What is the best setting to use? Whatever sounds the best I suppose?

What player are you using and what are the audio output settings on the player?

Guys. Use straight for yamaha to hear the audio as intended. Also DVD Is not Dolby atmos as it's from early 2000s. You want UHD blu-ray disks for Dolby atmos support and some blu-ray disks also support it.
