I recently rented my new pick for best film of 2000, Almost Famous along with various others. In comparison, I saw that Say Anything which was supposedly 1:85:1 like Almost Famous, were actually wider than AF. And AM appeared a bit flatter. Now can someone clear this one up for me? Is AM actually something like 1:66:1?

Almost Famous was framed for 1.85:1, like all other Academy ratio films made in the US. Only European and Asian films use the 1.66:1 ratio.

Crash is a Canadaian film (Cronenberg) and Paul Verhoven is Europeon (I honestly don't know which country he's from, though.).
Perhaps they preferred their native flat ratios for these films?
BTW, very few live-action films are 1.66:1 in the US. It's usually either 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. Exceptions include some Disney films with the matte opened up to 1.66:1 (the full aspect ratio on the film negative from CAPS) and maybe a few others.
The Majestic is hard-matted on film at 1.66:1 (from the prints I've seen), but projected at 1.85:1. Perhaps some boom mikes were accidentally exposed. [IMG]

The main intent of my post is why is AF flatter than SA?

Almost Famous could very well be 1.78, but since I don't have a front projector I can't confirm. I know that both Almost Famous and Say Anything are supposed to be 1.85, but some companies hold much tighter to that distinction.
I do believe that you are being a little picky though [IMG]

You're probably right. Oh well. I just love this movie almost to the point of obsession so I'm just curious.
